(Sound Gizmo) Jamie Myerson is an ambitious artist. On, Going...Gone (his second album of original compositions under the Sky City guise), he eagerly wants to up the ante of thoughtful, moody electronic music. Though clearly inspired by the dark moodiness of '80s synth groups, the album is perhaps a bit too intellectual. Beats percolate over a soundscape of New Age swirls and shuffles, building in intensity and drama, while the female vocals on "That's How Much I Love You" and "Walk Alone" resonate with the haunting emotions of Portishead. Despite the atmospheric melancholy, one always remains cognizant of its synthetic palate. This inability to escape the monotony of machinery erodes the ability to find much in the music to truly connect with. It is a creative, experimental work, one that aims at innovation but ultimately finds itself lost in electronic demonstration.
