4.0 out of 5 stars A break from the "Same Old, Same Old"

Metalcore is getting stagnant... so many bands, so many similar formulas. Sky Eats Airplane is definitely a refreshing take with good songs and some great drumming!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bubble-gum rock meets extreme metal
What's up with this new genre now? Of all the strange genres to branch out of the 90's and 'Oughties, I never thought high-school love rock and extreme metal would blend together to make... emo-grind?

4.0 out of 5 stars something a little different, August 10, 2008

This cd is worth checking out if you like bands like norma jean or every time I die. To me, it is a mix of those 2 with alot of apple studio effects which is what makes it sound so different. The only thing that might chase people away from this cd is the emo singing from time to time. I dont like emo but for some reason it worked with this cd, not to mention they are pretty sweet live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a GREAT CD that doesn't sound like everything else??, August 25, 2008

I was recommended this CD from a friend and fellow musician after a discussion regarding the staleness of most metal/hardcore bands who have either formed or released new music in the last year or so. The band was described to me as a mixture of August Burns Red and "They're Only Chasing Safety"-era UnderOath so I was a little intrigued.

Not being a very big fan of either of those bands but curious to hear the mixture of that particular sound, I decided to pick this CD up and take my friend's word that I would not be disappointed. As it turns out, his description of the band was not entirely accurate but the CD WAS great, as he had promised.

Sky Eats Airplane had a little bit more of a HORSE The Band sound to them on their first record, and on this new Self-Titled LP they show that they've grown leaps and bounds in the interim between the two. The electronic presence of the band is still in full effect but is utilized in an almost pop-songwriting sense (as opposed to the kitschy "nintendo-core" way on the first record) which complements the heavier side of the band with rousing success.

The other members of the band have a technical approach to their hardcore and metal parts (which, agreeably, is very much akin to August Burns Red) and complimented with the electronics this helps to create something very unique and completely enjoyable. The vocals switch between screams and pop-crooning but the singer has a solid enough voice to carry himself through the clean vocals and manage to make it still sound good.

There's enough variety in the songs to keep things interesting throughout the album and implementing pop-songwriting structure with tech-metalcore definitely lends to there being some incredibly contrasting moments on the CD that add to the intensity and freshness of the music. A personal favorite is track 03, "Numbers".

Overall, if you're a fan of music, you should enjoy this album, it's that simple. Nothing groundbreaking or legendary, but still great.

Sky Eats Airplane have grown from a spastic Nintendocore band to a band with a great taste for diversification. They included much more styles in this album than they did in the first EP, which turns out to be a good decision. Try it out!

5.0 out of 5 stars extremely dense album, October 13, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sky Eats Airplane (Audio CD)
I'm quite surprised by the seemingly polar reviews for this album. I would probably attribute this to the fact that a lot of people listen to music with two distinct handicaps: (A.) An opinion hinging upon/focused on vocals. (B.) An unwillingness to revisit and re-evaluate how they feel about a song or an album.

I highlighted the vocals because they are especially polarizing. While, admittedly, during more pop-minded phrases they can come off as a little bubble-gum, overall I feel that the intentions of the singer in wildly sweeping from hoarse screams to guttural growls to saccharine belting was simply to mimic what is happening in the instruments around him. And I think it works.

I didn't quite "get" this album the first time I heard it, but as the title of this review suggests, this album is incredibly dense, and I would suspect that even most "fans" such as myself, had to digest this work in pieces. By that I mean: I heard more and more every time I listened to it, up until I was able to survey its entirety. Each song is composed of many layers; often times each layer contributing its own melodic and rhythmic sensibilities to a larger shifting mass that constitutes the melody you interpret.

Any music fans with a penchant for dissecting music and an ability to give repeat listens to this challenging work will be rewarded by it's complexity. I have heard SEA's previous work and I feel that it ALL pales in comparison to this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything wrong on the perfect day haha! wtf, March 5, 2009
This review is from: Sky Eats Airplane (Audio CD)
This album was my introduction to SEA. I thought it was amazing until i heard "everything perfect on the wrong day" and then talent. i was listening to sick and undeniable and original talent! Regardless i kept coming back to some songs on this album and i still do. Steadily i realized this self titled s*** is infectious, even if the 1st cd was, and still is in my opinion, the ripest part of their fruit. SEA 2nd release is melodic, it's angular in it's own unique techno-esque way, and subtle in it's sincere lyrics.. And i keep thinking if only there were more than 3 freag'in reviews for "everything perfect on the wrong day"! CRAP! what are we listening to these days anyway? Self titled is a great album. but i can't help wondering what if SEA was more widely recieved with thier first ep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome album, October 19, 2008
This review is from: Sky Eats Airplane (Audio CD)
This was a very refreshing cd to listen to from start to finish. Sky Eats Airplane are an extremely talented band, that is for sure.

This album takes many elements and aspects of a stale genre and basically "remixes" them. Don't get me wrong, they deserve plenty of credit for being one of the more original bands out there right now. However, they still hold on to certain cliche trademarks, most of which still don't detract from the greatness. A neat touch to this cd is the heavy use of Mac based programming. It is never overdone, usually just the right amount.

A few things on this album really stood out to me. For Starters, this band is 100% solid. Every single note is played flawlessly from start to finish, including many technical phrases and time changes. The drummer lays down some incredible beats over technical and often melodic guitar. The musicianship is truly refreshing.

Something that should also be noted is the crystal clear album production. This cd isn't just full of music that is amazing, it actually SOUNDS amazing as well. Put on a good pair of headphones and you'll see.

3.0 out of 5 stars on the boring side, October 12, 2008
By
Stacie "stacie" (Lititz, PA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sky Eats Airplane (Audio CD)
I loved Aky Eats Airplane's older stuff, the really electronic stuff. Then this album came out, and I was really disappointed.

They lost a bunch of the electronics, and their new singer didn't blow me away. All the songs sound similar, which gets boring after awhile. and the songs are longer, which annoys me too.

Then I saw them live. Their live show is about fifty times better than this cd, it's a lot more intense, and not broing in any way. Obviously, its a live show, so its supposed to be that way, but this band blew me away(probably because it was hard to hear the singer's voice over the raging guitars, which are covered up by his voice on the cd). So I came home and listened to their cd again, hoping that it would have a similar effect, but it doesnt. So instead of rocking out to Sky Eats Airplane on my ipod, you'll find me at a mosh pit at one of their shows.
