5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Ever
I just plain loved this book. It is the story of ten year old Norah and her brother Gavin. It is the middle of World War Two, and Norah's parents fear a German Invasion is going to happen soon. Reluctantly, Norah packs her bags, leaves most of her friends behind, and sets sail for Canada. The second half of the book gives an honest account of trying to fit into a new...

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmm.....
I had to read this book for reading class. At first I thought, I really hate history and I don't want to read this. Then I started to read it and then I thought ok, I don't like it that much. Personally, I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought I would, and I wouldn't read the sequals because I didn't like the first book. I wouldn't give this book a 0, and probably...

Reluctantly, Norah packs her bags, leaves most of her friends behind, and sets sail for Canada. The second half of the book gives an honest account of trying to fit into a new country and culture, and dealing with the worst homesickness ever. My reccomendation is read it and buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sky Is Falling, May 6, 2000
This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
The Sky is Falling is a wonderful children's book by Canadian authouress Kit Pearson. It is the heart wrenching story of ten year old Norah and her brother Gavin, who flee England in the midst of the second World War. Gavin is too young to understand what is happening to him, but Norah knows perfectly well what is happening to her, her parents are shipping her off to some place called Canada, to live with people that she doesn't know in a place she has never visited. My reccomendation is to read it and buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best novel ever!!:), October 15, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
The Sky is Falling is one of my favourite novels!
It is about a ten-year old girl named Norah. She is living in England in World War II. Her parents out of concern for Norah's and Gavins (Norah's younger brother)well-being, send them on a ship to Canada to live with a canadian family until it is safe to come home. Norah protests, and is angry since she loves the excitment of the War, her friends and family. Both Gavin and Norah end up going to canada, and staying with "aunt Florence" and "aunt Mary" who took them in. "aunt Florence" loves Gavin and he is the center of everything, norah is not popular and things go down hill quickly. It is an incerdible story, that is worth every second of your time! You won't regret reading it!!!!:):)

This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
only the first book in a trilogy, "the sky is falling" is definitely a book to pick up and read. the lives of norah and gavin stoakes and their journey to canada is an extremely well written and touching story. once you finish this book, the other two ("looking at the moon" and "the lights go on again") are also must-reads! kudos to kit pearson, these books are brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Book, August 14, 2002
This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
The Sky is Falling by Kit Pearson is a very good book. The main character is ten-year-old Norah Stoakes, who lives in England in 1940, during World War Two. She loves living in England, and she and her friends have a secret club called the Skywatchers, who watch the sky for enemy planes. But then Mr. and Mrs. Stoakes decide that it would be best to send Norah and her five-year-old brother, Gavin, to live in Canada until the war is over. Norah is upset, but she is sent to Canada anyway. She and Gavin get sent to live with the Ogilvies, a rich mother and daughter that live in Toronto. The children are told to call them Aunt Mary and Aunt Florence. They prefer Gavin, because all they wanted was a boy. Norah hates it in Canada. She has no friends, because in school she is considered a coward. She is miserable. Will Norah ever grow to like Canada? Will she and Gavin ever see England again? This book was interesting, and the ending was surprising. It taught me about what it was like to be an English evacuee in Canada during World War Two.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best, most touching books around.., December 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
Although it is an unseemingly lucky, quickly paced and resolved story it is among the best children books written and as an adult, I can still read it and enjoy the sadness and earnestness in which the story is told. It goes back in time to World War II where the actual length of the war was unknown and where Hitler was a figure and power seemingly capable of anything. In the midst of this world finds a familt of four, Muv, Dad, Norah and Gavin. The star of the story, Norah, 10, is a headstrong tomboy who thinks it is cowardly to be sent away to the safer haven of Canada. Her brother Gavin, a sweet five year old, doesn't know what's happening. As Norah declines more and more into her misery and becomes a part of the Guest War family that happen to be powerful aristocrats, she forgets her fateful promise to her parents "Take care of Gavin." Aunt Florence, the woman who tries to model Gavin after her own dead son and had a sort of worship to the young boy has a huge personality clash with Norah. Among other this makes Norah more withdrawn, proud and stubborn than ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part One Of The Trilogy, January 8, 2002

This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
This is an exciting book about Norahs and her younger brothers (Gavin) trip from there home in England to Canada. The voyage across the ocean is exciting, but at the end of it Norah becomes more and more miserable. The rich woman in Toronto who takes them in prefers Gavin to her, the children in school taunt her, and as news from England becomes worse, she is filled with numbing homesickness. But as Christmas approaches and Norah begins to make friends, she discovers a surprising responsibility that helps her to accept her new country. This is the first of the trilogy

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!, April 11, 2000

This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
This is a Very good book. It is one of my favourite books! I like this book because Kit Pearson makes you experiance all the feelings of Norah, and makes you feel like you are in the book. If you like this book I highly recommend that you read the other books in this series. The way Ms. Pearson wrote this book makes you want to read on, and on.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!, February 11, 2000

This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
This book is amazing! I am not a big book lover most of the time, but this book really got to me. I actually borrowed it from the library by mistake but I read it anyway. After 1 day, I had finished it and the next day I took out the second book and when I was done with that I took out the next. This book draws you into the 1940's and into the Olgilvie house. This is a must read!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but there could be more..., October 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sky Is Falling (Paperback)
I found this book interesting, but very slow until more towards the late middle-early end. It could also be longer, or, if there isn't already, it could use a sequel. Although good books are supposed to leave you with questions left for you to figure out on your own, this left too many! I was even chacking the last few pages for any sign of the rest of the book! I definately think that this author has talent to write stories, but I also think that a brilliant sequel could have been done. If I heard about another story about Norah & Gavin's adventure in Canada & their trip home, I would read it in a heartbeat. I'm dying to know more about this book!
