4.0 out of 5 stars Great Little Film
I enjoyed this movie a lot despite the low budget. The makeup work is incredible, and the acting is pretty solid. What really sold me on it though is the score and the swordplay. It's very bloody and really well done. I'm happy I bought this. It is a DVD-R, but the picture quality is very good, there's a nice 5.1 mix, and you get plenty of extras.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I usually stay clear of no budget horror for obvious reasons, but with all the awards it's won, this one got my attention. I don't think it's as great as some other people on here, but I have to admit it I liked it. The characters are really fleshed out and interesting, the FX blew me away, and the music is beautiful. There weren't a lot of scares, but what they did do...

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth picking up!, May 2, 2010
This review is from: The Sky Has Fallen (DVD)
Genre fans rejoice. There is hope for the future. It's not flawless, but this film delivers. I've always loved post-apocalyptic flicks (Mad Max anyone?), and this one certainly puts a new spin on it. When a plague decimates the population, hooded figures show up and start controlling the dead, using them to wipe out the survivors. A guy and a girl pair up to hunt down their master. Cue the romance and carnage.

The acting is a little stiff at times, but the two leads do a good job, and I like the fact they're unknowns. It makes everything more believable. The samurai-flavored influences were a cool touch too. Definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Budget But Lots of Heart, April 21, 2010
This review is from: The Sky Has Fallen (DVD)
This isn't some glossy Hollywood production. It still looks great, but it has what those movies lack: heart. Plus, a good story, and the black robed demons are pretty creepy too. I didn't expect much, but in the end, I was really impressed especially for an indie. You get quite a lot of action too although the focus is on the two survivors' relationship, but there's plenty for fans of the red stuff. If you want to see something different especially for a pseudo-zombie flick (and the "zombies" look awesome by the way), check it out.

There weren't a lot of scares, but what they did do worked, and they had quite a few fight scenes. I wish there would've been more flashbacks to help tell the story. They still managed to do a lot though, and I was always entertained. I actually got pretty wrapped up in it by the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not like other zombie movies, August 8, 2010

Mel (Springfield, MO United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sky Has Fallen (DVD)
Before I watched this movie, I made the assumption that it was "another zombie movie." I wasn't sure what I was going to get, but I had hopes for a great film. You don't win film festival awards for nothing.

This movie was so much more than I initially gave it credit for.

Anyone can make a movie where everyone is attacked by bloody zombies and everyone dies. Many a large budget production has been created this way, with emphasis on gore and computer digitization. And I have never truly enjoyed those. Where's the story? (Sometimes I wonder if that's like asking for plot in an action flick.)

Well, it's the story that sets this film apart from the others. The two main characters are brought together for a reason. On the surface, it's the post-apocalyptic zombie creatures and survival that throws them together. But there's something deeper, and it's that next level that puts a unique spin on a horror film. While the chemistry between the actors is off in some places, the tension between the characters helps to carry the movie.

This is not a big studio production. However, there are aspects of the film that hold up to that quality. The cinematography and timing are fluid and beautiful. The score is spectacular. I'm in love with the score because it's gorgeous and unexpected from a movie of this nature.

Finally, I truly appreciated the throwback to the Hollywood of Hitchcock, where very little digitization techniques were used and the story was strong. After watching the Special Features, one comes to remember a time when big budget computer graphics didn't rule the world, when special effects and makeup were considered art. It's a nice feeling considering how many of today's blockbusters are just visually pretty but not a whole lot else.

4.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly solid horror, August 2, 2010
This review is from: The Sky Has Fallen (DVD)
Good indie horror movies are hard to find. I know. I've seen a ton of them. Usually, they look like they were shot on video, they have crappy sound, bad effects, terrible dialogue, awful rock music (provided by a local band, of course)... to sum it up for you, they suck. Thankfully, that's not the case here. You can tell they actually cared about what they were making, and the results speak for themselves. The zombies look amazing, the music was really good (strings with some bass drums), and the revenge/love story was excellent. But this isn't what you think it is. It's not your typical zombie movie with somebody being bitten and survivors running from location to location. It's so much better than that. The hooded monsters really get under your skin, and the two actors carry the movie well. They're not Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but unlike a lot of low budget films, I did care what happened to them. I went in with high expectations, and for once, I wasn't disappointed.

1.0 out of 5 stars How did this film win awards? How is this movie being allowed to be sold outright?!, July 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Sky Has Fallen (DVD)
Well I was drawn into buying this movie when I had seen the awards the movie had received. I am a huge horror buff and particularly like the indie horror films (Great movies like Night of the Living Dead and The Evil Dead are examples.) The reviews I read here on Amazon finalized my decision. Heck I even rush ordered this movie. Well it came in the mail and I popped it in the DVD player. Shortly after 45 min into I couldn't take it anymore. I took the DVD and threw it in the trash. I do not know where to start. I know it wasn't supposed to be big budget and its a indie film, but are you serious?! This movie lacked acting. Heck I have seen pornographic films with better acting. The story was very horrible. How some reviews say its original is beyond me. The main character Lance with his so called "sword skills" looked very very lame. It looked like something you would see at those dumb martial arts demos. The movie took place in the same woods the whole time. The sound track was absolutely horrible. It was just the same violin audio track replayed. I will maybe give props to the make up effects with zombies or whatever they are, but those things were just as lame as the "sword skills". They just sat there and did nothing. Then you would see some weird angle of some weapon attached to their arm. I am really really really skeptical to who has written these reviews I see about this movie and how "great" it is. Bottom line take your twenty dollars and burn it, because you would get more out of burning it then purchasing this movie, or buy something else from Amazon.
