4.0 out of 5 stars Very decent remakes of some great 80s songs
The movie was much better than I was expecting it to be, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the soundtrack. You know how some remakes either try to duplicate the original almost exactly or do them in a really different style? Well, most of the versions on this soundtrack do a great job of getting it right. The movie was much better than I was expecting it to be, and I was very pleasantly surprised by the soundtrack. You know how some remakes either try to duplicate the original almost exactly or do them in a really different style? Well, most of the versions on this soundtrack do a great job of getting it right. The songs are instantly recognizable to those who listened to the radio a lot in the 1980s and they mostly have the same sort of energy, but it's also clear that someone else is doing them in their own way.

For those who have forgotten the original artists, here's a rundown:

"I Melt With You" - The Modern English
"Through Being Cool" - Devo
"Save It For Later" - The English Beat
"Everybody Wants To Rule The World" - Tears For Fears
"One Thing Leads To Another" - The Fixx
"Lies" - The Thompson Twins
"Voices Carry" - Til' Tuesday (Aimee Mann)
"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" - The Smiths
"True" - Spandau Ballet
"Just What I Needed" - The Cars
"Can't Stop The World" - The Go Go's
"And She Was" - The Talking Heads
"Twist And Crawl" - The English Beat

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Update, August 7, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
The "Sky High" soundtrack is a nice walk down memory lane for those parents who care enough for their children to actually take them to the movies and risk sitting through a bad flick. Fortunately for us old folks, the movie is just as good as the soundtrack.

Some hangers-on of yesterday will not like these updated versions of old Eighties tunes. Let's face it folks, that decade has come and gone many years ago. These new versions are more than up to the task of providing some good music for a fun film.

My favorite cover on this album is Bowling for Soup's "I Melt With You." A close second is Vitamin C's "Voices Carry." Most of these songs were treated kindly, and there is only slight tweakings to the original hit found here.

Most of these songs were the only hits for their respective original bands. I suggest to anyone who has a child interested in these tunes that they plunk down some money for an 80's compilation that includes these songs. Groups like The Cars obviously had more than just one hit, so their greatest hits collections would be great to introduce your kids to. I already own most of the originals on this disc, but I really enjoy putting on this "Sky High" soundtrack because it, much like the film, is quite enjoyable.

Highly recommended to any fan of the old tunes from the decade of excess and their kids. It's a great way to introduce your family to a time that has long since left us.

4.0 out of 5 stars good buy for '80s fans, July 29, 2005
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
No score on the CD. Not a bit. Which is too bad, but hey, whattaya gonna do.

Here's what IS on the CD. A bunch of songs, most of them cover versions of '80s warhorses like "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" and "True." ("True" is put to especially hilarious use in the movie, by the way.)

There is nothing inspired or original or exceptional on the disc, but this is a fun CD is you're an '80s fan (or if you've seen the movie and dug the songs). And the movie? I can't believe it's true, but it is: it's great, WAY better than the previews indicated. Check it out.

4.0 out of 5 stars So Much Fun!, August 5, 2005
By
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
I took my kids to see this movie last weekend, and I smiled every time a new song came on. All of the songs are covers of 80's originals, and while most of the originals are better, these are still a lot of fun. And it's a great way to get all of the songs on one CD and introduce my kids to them. While I have almost all of these songs on CD already by their original artists, I still want this CD. And apparently, a lot of other people do too, because it has been sold out of 3 different stores that I have gone to!

I bought this Cd after seeing the movie. The movie was great fun and so is the Cd.!
The songs from the Cd are all songs from the 80's recorded by current day groups. Classic songs like "I Melt with You" , "true" and "Everybody Wants to Rule The World" are well done.{ You should try to find the original of "I Melt With You" by Modern English-it is one of all time great records}. My favorite songs on the Cd are "Please,Please,Please Let Me Get What I want" by Elefant-an amazingly beautiful ballad; "Just What I Needed" by Caleigh Peters; a real rocking version of " Can't Stop the World" by Ginger Sling and "Through Being Cool" by They Might Be Giants.
You will enjoy the movie and the soundtrack. Don't wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally awesome, AGAIN!!!, April 1, 2006
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
Personally, I loved this CD! I am a 40 year old child of the 80's, and I collect every type of music from the 80's, from real alternative, to hair metal, to the much revered New Wave. I think that if bands cover tunes and they treat them with respect, and show that they love the songs, then that comes across in the performance. I guess with a couple of songs they had to make some very minor lyrical changes to make them family-friendly, but that's ok, you have to listen hard to catch them. To the reviewer from Texas, the song "We're Through Being Cool" is not original, it's a remake of a DEVO song, and it is just as good as the original. If you liked this, another one to try out is the soundtrack to "Not Another Teen Movie". It's also loaded with 80's songs covered by contemporary artists, and it's just as much fun as this one. One thing I like to do is let the kids that work for me hear both of these soundtracks, and see how much they enjoy them, and then I play the originals versions for them. You'd be amazed at how much they like music older than they are! Give both of these a listen, the covers are well done, and treated with respect. All 80's afficionados will truly love them.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Original Songs, August 18, 2007
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
Original songs for all of the 80's covers on this soundtrack:
1. I Melt With You-Modern English
2. Through Being Cool-Devo
3. Save It For Later-The English Beat
4. Everybody Wants To Rule The World-Tears for Fears
5. One Thing Leads To Another-The Fixx
6. Lies-Thompson Twins
7. Voices Carry-'Til Tuesday
8. Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want-The Smiths
9. True- Spandau Ballet
10. Just What I Needed-The Cars
11. Can't Stop The World-The GoGos
12. And She Was- Talking Heads
13. Twist And Crawl-The English Beat

LISTEN TO THE ORIGINALS-this soundtrack was a cute idea and is fun if you like covers. But you cannot beat the original songs. (In reference to some of the other reviews for this CD-there is not one original song on this soundtrack, nor is there a one-hit wonder covered on this soundtrack. Every artist covered here had multiple hits in the eighties.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great remakes!, December 22, 2005
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
I just saw this movie on DVD the other day with my kids and husband. We are of the 80s generation and our kids couldn't figure out why we were laughing so much. Such memories!!! The movie was great and the soundtrack gave us adults a little something to enjoy also. I actually enjoy the remakes of the classics because it freshened them up a bit.

Here's hoping there will ba s sophomore year for the Sky High crew!

5.0 out of 5 stars great dance down memory lane, March 18, 2008
This review is from: Sky High (Audio CD)
A comic book geek as a teenager, I winced when I first saw this movie advertised. Once I saw it, however, I loved it so much that I bought the DVD and soundtrack. My favorite is Steven Strait's "One Thing Leads to Another." I followed him to "Undiscovered" and that soundtrack which has him singing almost all the songs. His growth as a singer is great. I made a movie mix and play all these songs in my classroom sometimes during group work. My students loved the movie Sky High too.
