This is the most beautiful CD I've heard in a very long time. I have been looking for a great recording of the Bartok Roumanian Folk Dances played on flute for awhile now. This is the best recording of this piece. I love hearing modern works for flute and harp. This is not the usual rep for both instruments. I can't praise this CD enough. Buy it and you'll find out for yourself. I'm a flutists and hope to hear Dr. Kemler perform live and attend some of her classes in the flute festivals. That would be one of my lifes highlights!

This ain't your typical "wedding schmaltz" harp and flute. This is a collection of more modern works for harp and flute, masterfully performed. Often it is male harp/flute duos that seek out this kind of muscular, meaty fare; so it's a delight to see women venturing into this territory, and handling it with dexterity and verve.
This is the only CD I've found so far that includes a recording of the exquisite 3 movement work, "Song of the Lark" by Charles Young. It is a piece that has lyric moments and groundbreaking elements - notably the weaving of paper through the lower strings to create an effect on the harp that is somewhere between a snare drum and electric guitar. (Yes, I've said "electric guitar", so you know this is not your usual fare.) Still, by now, most of these works are familiar to duos, and individually used to spice up a more mundane program. Put together as they are here, played with simplicity and excellence, they create something rare. Unfortunately, this means this CD is not for the musically faint of heart. If you only want to hear "pretty music" or things you've heard before, this probably isn't for you. I think of this CD as resource material, and if you have friends who are musically literate, this would be an excellent gift to expand their horizons. (It goes without saying that if you have family/friend who plays flute or harp, this would be a very thoughtful and useful gift of repertoire ideas.) |
