This review is from: The Sky Men: A Parachute Rifle Company's Story of the Battle of the Bulge and the Jump Across the Rhine (Hardcover)
By far, one of the best books I have ever read about a U.S. Airborne Company preparing for, and engaging in combat during WWII. This book focuses on the 17th Airborne -- 513th Regiment -- Company F -- which entered combat during the Battle of the Bulge and also jumped in the last airborne operation of WWII -- Operation Varsity.
Written by author Kirk Ross, and released (2000) 1 year prior to the release of the HBO mini-series, Band Of Brothers -- it is a raw look at true American warriors from a division that does not get the same attention as the 101st or 82nd AB Divisions of WWII.
As a frequent reader of all material relating to paratroopers during World War II, I was extremely happy with this book. It is a very honest "tell it like it was" book from the men who got down and dirty with the enemy. This is an uncensored account that does not shy away from telling the good, the bad, and the ugly incidents. For those that have read Mark Bandos book "Avenging Eagles" will find many similar uncensored accounts in this book. We need to understand the sacrifices our veterans made, including for many, their own sanity. Killing is an ugly business, and these men were good at what they did.
Schiffer Publishing always releases high quality books, so the reader will not be disappointed adding this book to their collection. A plethora of excellent b-w photographs are also included. I do want to point out, that Amazon info states this book contains 272 pp, however, it actually has 462 pp including appendices, notes and index...377 pp is actual written text.
This is a must for any paratrooper enthusiast, or anyone wanting an honest look at the hell of war.
