4.0 out of 5 stars Near perfect
I came across Michal in a most unexpected place. While heading off to work, I passed the TV where my mom was watching "One Life to Live". Michal was performing on the show for some Valentine's special. I fell in love instantly and tracked down this CD.

1.0 out of 5 stars This is H-O-R-R-I-B-L-E - HORRIBLE!
The comparisson to Heather Nova was ridiculous. The only thing these women have in common (and we all know it isn't talent) is that they're both capable of bearing children.

You can find better-sounding music on any amateur night in any bar in any city in any country on any continent.

Maybe that's a bit much. The thing is - this woman doesn't sound bad,...

Absolutely fantastic! Although some of the songs are a little too poppy for my taste, even the pop tracks are really good. Better than most of the pop garbage on the airwaves today.
I think my absolute favorite would be "Free Dirt" which is just as grungy and dark as the title would make you believe and yet you can tell there is emotion behind it. Most of her songs are like that. Think Alanis Morrisette without the high annoyance factor and more musical and singing ability.
I'd recommend this heavily to fans of Srah McLachlan & Heather Nova.

-I would.

With so much confectionary pop dominating the airwaves and music stores, It's refreshing to see that Michal writes and produces all of her own music. Her style is complex and melodic-ranging from driving angry beats in "Juliet's Refrian" to softer melodies as in "Violet Delight" and "Perfect". Michal's sound is reminicent of the famous Phil Spector "Wall of Sound" that defined the 60's. If you find yourself still hungry for a little catchy pop, you will find it in a more sophisticated form in "My Friend" and "Broken Boy". God Bless Michal for delivering us from teen pop and showing us that our young people still have a talent worth listening to!

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful CD, September 15, 2001
This review is from: Sky With Stars (Audio CD)
This CD is absolutley amazing. It has hard, rock-edge songs like 'Juliet's Refrain' but has softer, deeper songs like 'The Light' and 'Ripe'. There isn't one song on here that I didn't like but some of my favorites are 'Ripe', 'April is Gone' and 'Broken Boy'.

What's sad, though, is that talented artists like Michal aren't getting much attention, not when pop groups are around. I just hope that Michal comes out with another cd soon, because she definitly has the talent to do anything.

So support talented indie artists like Michal by buying this record. You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars :Sophisticated Spin On TeeN Angst:, August 14, 2002

Michal has DEFINATLY proved herself worthy to be crowned as a new voice in singer/songwriter genre. But her's aren't all bubblegum and pathetic,Michal has extrodinary writing skills. The lyrics are extremly brilliantly crafted together along with her smooth and polished piano playing. But with some heavy and moody guitar settings, this can EASILY be known as a definate power album. Her vocals are quite astounding, they fit perfectly with the lyrics,Michal definatly gets thumbs up for just letting the world know that yeah there is teen angst(i.e.-heart wrenching love, rejection, but also some catchy rock/pop tunes like "My Friend)and she definatly doesn't sugar coat it like bubblegum songer writers Michelle B. or Vanessa C. Michal puts a sophistacted whirl on the angst we all have inside

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, March 27, 2001
This review is from: Sky With Stars (Audio CD)
Michal manages to be melancholy, optimistic, wise, vulnerable, rough, and smooth all in the same song and still make it work. She sings like a seasoned pro, plays guitar, piano and drums, writes songs that are poetic and deep, and she even produced about half of the album. All this and the girl was 18 when the album was recorded. It really makes you think about these Britney/Christina-girls and how they are so popular and selling millions of albums while someone as talented, young, and as beautiful as Michal is getting virtually no attention fromh the media. My theory is that the world isnt ready to have to think about music, they just want something to dance to. But geniuses like Michal may be misunderstood or unappreciated now, but eventually they will get their credit. I recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of alternative, rock, trance, pop or even folk. You won't be disappointed!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Promising Debut, June 20, 2000

I first heard of Michal from a friend who had heard one of her songs playing in a record store in Chicago. She told me that Michal was somewhat of a cross between Sarah McLachlan and Ani DiFranco. Now that I have had the chance to listen to her myself, I think she was right. Michal is incredibly talented for someone so young. She writes all her lyrics and they contain much of the same poignant, beautiful honesty that Sarah McLachlan's do. There is also an edge to Michal's voice as well, you can hear every emotion she's feeling. Although all the songs on her debut CD are incredible, a few were exceptional. My favorites are Juliet's Refrain and Perfect. It would be easy to put Michal in the same category with other young singer/songstresses such as Kendall Payne and Shelby Starner, but Michal has her own style (as do Kendall and Shelby). I would recommend Sky With Stars to anyone who likes insightful, honest lyrics, beautiful instrumentals, and a gritty yet delicate voice. I can't wait to hear her next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, powerful music, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Sky With Stars (Audio CD)
Like a reviewer below, I first heard Michal's music on One Life to Live. I was so entranced that I did all that I could to find out whatever I could about getting my hands on her music. While I was disappointed that most of the music on OLTL was not on the only record she had out at the time, Sky with Stars, I went ahead and ordered the CD expecting nothing less than brilliance after what I had heard on the soap opera. That had to be the greatest decision of my life, because I have found nothing but inspiration and true character in this music. You won't find anyone else like her.

Not only are her lyrics powerful and moving, but the strength in the voice that delivers them is nothing short of phenomenal. Michal bares her soul in twelve original and mind-blowing pieces of fantastic musical art. The intricacy of her melodies in guitar and piano blends marvelously with the eloquence of her, as many have said, smoky voice and the true brilliance of her lyrics.

This is the stuff that stars are made of. Five years from now, you won't find a soul on this earth that hasn't heard and loved Michal Towber. Ironically, in a sky full of stars, Michal shines the brightest.

I read about Michal in an issue of "Teen" magazine last spring. I immediately downloaded "Juliet's Refrain" to see what it sounded like -- and was amazed. It's one of the best songs I've ever heard. Right away I ordered "Sky With Stars" from Amazon.com. Unfortunately, they were out of stock for weeks and weeks, and finally I gave up after a few months of waiting. I called all the music stores in town, and they can't get "Sky with Stars" in either. I even resorted to downloading, but Michal's music isn't available online either. Hopefully something will happen that will get this amazing artist out there -- I want to hear more of her work.

5.0 out of 5 stars strange girl, July 14, 2000

Michal states the universal in an innovative and eerily perceptive way. Her CD is a world unto itself, letting you crawl into her room and her head. She is sometimes hesitant but never unwilling to be human and imperfect in the secrets she tells. Close your eyes and get chills.

5.0 out of 5 stars Angelic Voice, June 21, 2000

I bought Michal's cd this afternoon and I have to say, I was amazed by the beautiful voice that is Michal. This cd is perfect for any time. From the floaty ballads to the up-lifting dance tracks, this cd has everything. On "My Friend," Michal demonstrates her wonderful ability to emote emotion through a song while at the same time engaging the listener for the next forty minutes. The rest of the tracks stand on their own and should all be released as singles. Go buy your copy today! You won't be dissappointed!
