Product Description

Style: 10" Collapsible Dobsonian

This is a big, friendly horse of a telescope you can ride off into the sunset with, and then thrill to well resolved celestial views when twilight fades. The SW 10" DOB is an very satisfying telescope to own, an instrument that will provide a lifetime of continuing exploration of the heavens. This telescope will hit the sweet-spot for many amateurs, providing all the capability and value you are seeking in a large aperture telescope. Sky-Watcher's revolutionary truss-support concept allows the optical tube's front and back cells to collapse together, aligning on the truss support rods which can then be locked down for easy and secure telescope transport. This one piece, low-hassle OTA design is mechanically simple and results in a large aperture telescope that can be reasonably handled and transported by one individual. This innovation gives Sky-Watcher users tremendous functional ease-of-transportability.

I just got the Skywatcher 12 Collapsible Dobsonian. Previously, the only telescope I had was an Orion Shorttube 80 that I put on a Camera Tripod. I wanted the largest scope that a single person could move (in 2 pieces) and that would fit in a small sedan (Acura Integra and Honda Civic). I looked at the Orion Xx12 but didn't need the computer and I liked the Skywatcher over it because of the collapsible feature.

So the scope got delivered yesterday

First impressions

1: Holy moly!, this thing is huge!!

It took about 30-45 minutes to put everything together (very clear instructions and all tools provided). I then took the scope outside (moving the base first, and then the OTA). Against all odds, we had clear skies but I only had about an hour or so after sunset before running errands. The scope sat outside for about 1-2 hour to cool off the mirror and wait for darkness. I then collimated the primary and secondary using a homemade collimating cap (35mm film canister with hole punched in lid). I have a laser collimator (Orion) on order but I made do with the film canister for now. I then aligned the right angle finder (pain to use, I have a telrad on order to replace it).

I've never collimated a dob before, but it was pretty straightforward and took about 5-10 minutes. The scope came with a 10mm and a 25mm plossls (I already have another 25mm, 12mm and 6mm plossls and a 2x barlow).

I viewed M42 in Orion and the views were stunning even from my somewhat light polluted backyard using the 25mm (60X) and 25mm+2x barlow (120x). I'm pretty sure I saw dust lanes. I even used the 12mm + 2x barlow (250x) and felt that I could have gone even higher in magnification.

Unfortunately, then I was out of time and had to pack up the scope.

I have never owned or operated a telescope before but I began looking for a beginner scope for over a year now. Upon several reviews and forum ratings, I originally went with the Celestron 127EQ (Big Mistake) So I immediately returned it. Not only was the mount hard to maneuver but darn near impossible to collimate.

So I started my search over and the term Dobsonian (Type of Mount) kept popping up from amateur astronomers.
So naturally I being researching and came across this magnificent scope!!

Not only is The dobsonain mount easy to maneuver, lock and keep track/move with the sky.
It's easy to assemble!! (All needed tools are in the box)

Now to the scope it self.. When you first unbox the unit you can immediately tell it is very well crafted.. (no cheap plastic bits)
The 2" focuser is very smooth (it does come with a 1.25" adapter) and the x2 - 1.25" plossl lens it comes with are very decent quality (only wish it came with a Barlow lens)
The finder Scope is excellent quailty and accurate as well

I was skeptical about the whole collapsible thing, but it transitions very smoothly making it much easier to store and carry. So very glad I went this way. Plus it keeps the primary mirror and secondary mirror in completely different tubes.. (Just in case you drop a tool or 2 down the tube it doesn't bust up your primary mirror.)

After my horror story with the 127EQ I bit the bullet and purchased a hotech 2"/1.25" laser crosshair collimator..seriously collimation is a snap (2 mins Max) ...A must have !!

After every is ready to go and it's all collimated.. And you finally sit down..on a clear night..

I ordered this scope yesterday, and it was delivered today (go Amazon!, I initially ordered though Celestron, but they lied about having it in stock and also charge more). The packaging was sufficient, no damage to the scope or parts.

Assembly was easy and tools are included. Took about 20 minutes to put together. Unlike the picture, the mount was black (which I prefer anyway).

The collimation was off a little, but better than I expected - I used a laser collimator to get things aligned to my liking.

First light was tonight! M42 and Jupiter looked great. I used low power (30x) and high (250x), and both provided reasonable images. Unfortunately the moon was quite bright and it was windy and cold, so the session was short.

So far, I'm impressed with the amount of scope I have for the price. I'll update again as I have the chance to do more observing.

- Update on 4/14/2013: Viewing has been good. After a bit more collimation, the scope is performing well and I have no complaints. Except with Celestron - they seem to ignore their customers feedback and have not responded by any of my complaints about their service. I am quite hesitant to purchase any Celestron products in the future based on this.

Amazing scope for the price. Easy to set up, small enough to fit in a small car. My only issues with it are my height (6'3") means I have to bend over to view which sometimes is uncomfortable. Easy enough to fix with a 20" box. Also, the finder scope is a little too high power to really navigate the sky for a novice. I suggest getting a telrad sight in addition to the finder scope. Makes everything that much easier to start hop.
