Let me start by saying I love researching products before I buy them, mostly online but I am also not afraid to ask people their opinion of a product I have my eye on. I was looking at both the line of sight digital rangefinders and the GPS units. My friend has a Callaway and while accurate i felt like using it on every shot would be a headache (and of course you always have to have a clear view of the pin). I have friends that have older versions of the golf buddy and of the sky caddie and seemed happy with both. I liked the fact that that the yardage is documented by someone actually walking the golf courses with the sky caddie. Based on my research the error factor can be (+ or -) up to 10 yards on a straight GPS unit which is obviously hugh and made me reluctant to include the Garmins of the world which were nice but straight GPS. Also the 30.00 annual "fee" charged for the SGX was not a deal breaker with me as it is with some people on the 'Net provided that the unit delivered as advertised.
I was very pleased with the SGX after my first two outings. The SGX indicated the distance to all of the hazards and to the front, middle, and back of the green and on my home course I which I found to be very accurate. I couldn't wait to take it to a new unfamiliar course.
Well now I will have to wait because my SkyCaddie SGX froze up and would not reboot even after a hard reset. To be fair their customer service is sending me a new one( I had to provide a credit card which will only be charged if I don't return the old one) but it is going to take five business days. I am pleased they are not sending me a refurbished unit and not making we wait to receive the old one but expediting the shipping as I requested would have gone a long way in restoring my confidence in their company.

I have always been a fan of skycaddie. I had the SG4, SG5 and now the SGX. Stay AWAY from the SGX. The quality control is really poor. I know of three other users having the same problem, the antenna cover falls off and the unit does not get satelite reception. It becomes a piece of junk. Once that unit got replaced, in less than 5 months, the rubber covering the knob that allows you to select items had a tear and now the unit is no longer waterproof. This is not covered under warranty and they want you to pay $89.95 for a replacement. I am done with SkyCaddie. I have just purchased the new Garmin G6, awesome device, no annual fees, long battery life and touch screen enabled.

Excerpts taken from Par4Me's excellent review here on Amazon.

With over 300 rounds on his SGX, and a self described expert on the unit.

"I had gotten tired of the sluggishness of the SGX in performing all the various features found on this unit. The SGX unit's processor was so slow that it was slowing my game down to the point fellow golfers had brought this to my attention. Too much time was being spent waiting for the screen to change from one to another. Too much time was wasted waiting for numerous prompts"

"No more waiting for prompts and for screens to change."

"However the older SGX input device was problematic also, contrary to the user's criticism, in that this input device was very sluggish and took time to catch up to the user's input. Eventually you would get frustrated using this device."

"I have turned off all scoring on my units. This eliminates the scorecard screen from appearing and eliminates numerous prompts for scores, putts, fairways. I have also turned off the landscape option which (really slowed the SGX down) is a major power drain. I also turned off targets on both units"

1st Place Winner - Golf Digest Hot List - Because they're a big advertiser on Golf Digest.

This is a pure smoke and mirrors company.

They have a forum you can go to and see what other problems their users are having. You'll notice almost NONE. Is it because they manufacture such a great product? NO. It's because it's the way they operate. Go check their forum posting guidelines, where they clearly state they can and will change reality. I purchased my first SkyCaddie SG5 in April, 2010 - I traded it in for an SGX in October, 2010 to get the promised advancements - in total I have invested several hundred dollars into this piece of technology not to mention the annual subscriptions. I had to have my first SGX replaced because it would frequently lock-up leaving me on the golf course trying to make a piece of technology work, taking away from my game. My replacement SGX after two years of ownership stopped finding satellites - I'm now an expert in soft-resets and GPS reset procedures, none of which resolved the problem this time. I called SkyGolf customer support center; all of the call center representative have always been very nice to work with, they said to me that my only recourse was to have it replaced for $89.95. This replacement unit only has a 90 day warranty. I shared that ever since owning the SGX I've gone through more software updates and unexplained operating experiences that I don't believe this product and its software are ready for commercial use. In any other similar circumstance I would have taken up the offer and moved on, however, SkyGolf has a very poor track record with me and I'm unwilling to continue doing business with them. I'm going to use my iPhone 4S with an impressive app that appears to be the death of products like SkyCaddie. I wish my SkyCaddie worked, I wish the SkyCaddie online SYNC worked, but they both are in some form of "almost there" - what is with this company's technology leadership? Over the past two years I've spent more time trying to get this thing to flow naturally through the course of play, after play uploading my scores, etc. - it's now time to say good-bye. I'm leaving this for anyone anticipating a SkyCaddie - avoid it at all cost - there has to be a better solution and a better company to do business with. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
