4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent except.......
I bought two of these recently, one for a friend. Was out playing the other day with him and another guy. We all had different sky caddies, the 2.5, the 4 and the 5. They all agreed with each other all the time, they were extremely accurate and brilliantly mapped. The only difficulty with the SG4 is, why oh why do they have that awful connecting lead. Beware and do...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Design and Bad Support
I have been using my skycaddie for two seasons. Last month the plug would not screw into the unit and I couldn't charge it. I called tech support and they said that I could either send it back and they would replace it or apply scotch tape to hold the plug in. I opted to send it in. They received it 8/8/08 and as of today 9/5/08 I have not heard from the company...

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad Design and Bad Support, September 5, 2008

This review is from: SkyCaddie SG4 GPS (Misc.)
I have been using my skycaddie for two seasons. Last month the plug would not screw into the unit and I couldn't charge it. I called tech support and they said that I could either send it back and they would replace it or apply scotch tape to hold the plug in. I opted to send it in. They received it 8/8/08 and as of today 9/5/08 I have not heard from the company. They say I just have to wait my turn. Bad support  and bad design. The connection should not be a small screw that can strip easily. They should consider a re-design with a USB plug. I have found the unit helpful but on our course there are about 4 holes where the distances are 10-15 yards off and the unit occasionally freezes forcing me to reset it by opening the back and removing the battery.

1.0 out of 5 stars No support if it does not work, June 8, 2009
By
Purchased May 08. When connecting out of the box, the web site wanted to upgrade hand held device (which is a normal process). The update crashed leaving me with an inoperable device and the website not recognizing the device anymore. (Check web search and you will see this is a common problem). I spent two weeks trying to contact customer service at skygolf, but over 6 emails went unanswered and phone calls (and long holds) offered no solution. I am stuck with a device that never worked and no customer service from skygolf or amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars poor product - terrible quality and customer service, July 2, 2008
Don't buy SkyCaddie or other SkyGolf Product!

I am on a quest to warn people about SkyGolf / SkyCaddie. I bought an SG4 mainly because of the SD RAM expansion slot which I have several adds saved where it is promised that this slot allows you to save more courses; LIE, the slot does nothing, never did.I have called SkyCaddie about this many times and have been promised a solution over and over. At this point it is too late, there are way too many better technologies on the market. On top of it all I had a terrible time finding and maintaining satellite connections.

uPro is the unit I like best and, after I purchased it, I sent them an e-mail support question and they got back with me within 24 hours - ON A SUNDAY! I waited for weeks and never received promised call-backs from SkyGolf. Their customer support is a joke; I suspect that their business model will not be sustainable since they will soon not be able to charge people $30.00 a year. I believe that this puts SkyGolf at risk of going out of business as their business model requires that people continue to be willing to pay this outrageous fee.

I have never used the GolfBuddy, but plan to buy one soon for traveling as it has 20,000 courses pre-loaded. There are others, such as iGolf, which are far less expensive than the SkyCaddie.

I think that SkyGolf thought that their IntelliGreen patents would give them a sustainable advantage; fortunately uPro has blown that technology out of the water. In short, SkyGolf was early, but is not the technology leader , pricing leader or customer service leader (in fact I have rarely, if ever, dealt with a company with worse customer service).

BTW, if anyone wants a used SG4 for Cheap, I got one that will be selling used

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Beware and do not overtighten the little grub-screw. What was wrong with the standard USB connector on the 2.5 and 5. Also, a little tip. If you fit the connecting lead upside down you can charge the unit via a USB port. Found that out by accident. All in all, brilliant piece of equipment, awful connector. The new software and features on skygolf make this a great value, older type system with all modern bells and whistles

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Poor Design, No Customer Support, April 14, 2009
Great product. Terrible customer service and manufacturing design/quality. I recently had a power connector problem. On the SG4 unit it has a screw-in connector on the USB power cable. It ends up getting stripped out on the inserted nut on the unit due to the lack of threads on the cable side. So, I send an email to Skycaddie, 2 days later, the reply tells me to call Cust. Serv/ Tech Support for an RMA number and to see if there is an other technical issues. My first call was 15 mins, I hung up, had to do something. My second call, I stay on the phone waiting another 28 mins, while chatting with a Cust. Support person. They told me to continue to hold for the next rep. I told him to just pickup the phone and call me, he couldn't that is a different department. Man, talk about fustration. As a Mech. Engr. I end up pulling the nut out of the back of the unit and flipping up side down, using the other end and re-inserting/pressing back into the unit. It will work until it strips out this end. Anyway, don't buy a Skycaddie unit unless you are prepared to treat it as a disposible electronic device. hehe Aloha, Mark

This review is from: SkyCaddie SG4 GPS (Misc.)
This gps worked well for 2 yrs. This year it wouldn't sync with the computer. It has been sent back twice (starting in April) and I still don't have it working (June). Customer service and support is abominable from this company. I suggest trying a different company.

1.0 out of 5 stars SkyCaddie Hell, November 2, 2009

I am finised with this product. Although adequate on course, it is impossible to download courses in less than an hour. It should be the poster child for computer hell. I would rather have the yips than be forced into another session of updating my software and downloading a course. Do not buy this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor power connection design, April 20, 2009
By
Marsha (Southern California) - See all my reviews
The threaded power cord connection is poorly designed on the GS4. In time the female threads on the port become stripped. Skycaddie wants between $35 and $100 to return the product for repair. They were not interested in my suggestion that the company back a poorly designed product by covering this defect under warranty. i have found that their customer serve is lacking.

2.0 out of 5 stars When it works it's great, March 9, 2009
By
Bill (Raleigh, nc United States) - See all my reviews
All the reviews seem to be accurate. When it works it's great. Problem is between the difficulty doing setup, then the resets etc it's not a solid product for the $200-$300. I just downloaded a software update last month. Hoping there are some improvements. Also, understand you have to pay the membership fee every year or the downloaded courses will deactivate. Not sure if other golf GPS companies work like that or not. I think Garmin has a less expensive membership fee.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great device when it finally / if ever gets satellite signal, January 31, 2009
By
When the SG 4 finally locks onto signal this is a fantastic golf aid. But I have found in the Pacific NW that it has trouble locking onto the satellites and seems to be worse when it is cloudy out. I have had to reset the GPS on many different occasions before it will lock on and on some occasions that does not even work. I have started it prior to while I was on the practice green hoping that the extra time would allow it to lock on to a couple of good signals, this is hit or miss. I may have a bad version but the lack of support from SkyGolf has been an issue. I would look at other vendors before SkyCaddie in the future.
