5.0 out of 5 stars The human side of a superheroine, September 23, 2001

This review is from: Skye Sparkler (Paperback)
The early portion of the book, which explains how and why 30-something Marcy Martin is transformed into 12 year old Skye Sparkler, is necessary for background, but lacks the color and characterization of the post transformation portion. The contrast is as stark as the pre and post tornado segments of the 1930's movie version of "The Wizard of Oz".
Her struggle to be accepted as what she is - an adult; a good human being willing to sacrifice herself for others, even strangers; and, incidentially, someone with super powers that defy the laws of physics - not a child, as her new body would seem to make her; nor a somehow sinister being; nor a fraud and hoaxter - is the fascinating core of the story. Her super feats are very secondary to her existence as a "real" (in a fictional sense) human being.
I would definitely like a sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, August 4, 2001

This review is from: Skye Sparkler (Paperback)
This book is great. An adult woman accidentally turns herself into a pre-teen superhero. But that doesn't begin to describe what makes this book so charming. Don't get me wrong. There's plenty of superhero action. But what makes Skye work for me is the characters. Marcy is someone I'd like to know personally, both before and after her transformation. And while it would have been easy to surround her with stereotypical characters (the angry boss, the unbelieving FBI agent, the unfeeling politician), Metzger instead gives us real people with real responses to what has happened. So, I'd recommend this one to anyone whose ever wondered what it would be like to fly like Superman. And I hope Skye makes a return appearance real soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Intersesting Angle, August 3, 2001

Skye is a very interesting book. It explores a new angle on the superhero/wish-fulfillment myth, and is about a wish that both gives and takes away. Would you want to become a superhero if the cost was both your identity and your physical maturity?

4.0 out of 5 stars Skye Sparker, July 13, 2001

A Charming and well done tale about a search for identity. Tr Metger's story is well written and engaging, and to be honest who hasn't wanted to be a superhero once in thier life? However superpowers and cool effects are hardly the crux of the book, The main force of the story is the fact tha while marcy has been given fantastic powers, she has also been given the bosy of a 12 year old, and has to prove her identitiy, especialy to the government and her job who have a hard time believing that this 12 year old kid is a superhero, let alone the fact that she is actually in her 30s. When I found out that the authour worked for comics buyers guide it really came as no shock to me his knowledge and mastery of the superhero genre is evident. and his style reminds me a lot of Peter David's work on young justice. I would recomend this to anyone who likes a superhero tale with a human touch!
