My Main Complaint is It's Too Short!,
By Astrogrrl (Boulder, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Skylab E.P. (Audio CD)
Trippy-hip lyrics, poppy beats great for practicing the lost art that is pogo, catchy guitar solos, infectious tunes that infiltrate your mind and leave you with Manplanet fever; this band is ear candy with added nutritional value. Forget Eminem, and grab this bag of Skittles-colored men who pound out power-pop like there's no tomorrow. Influenced by glam, early-80s rock, and a strong dose of Jetsons retro-chic, Manplanet takes on pressing modern-day issues such as space exploration, Minnesota landmarks, robot angst, and cheap sci-fi thrillers and emerges victorious in a flash of smoke. Of course, the only way to get the full Manplanet experience is to see them live, but for those of you who live outside their touring area, I suggest you buy this EP, light a couple sparklers, and dance the liner notes around in front of your face. If you don't wanna do that, just buy this EP.

3D Space Rock with a side of Action!,
By Christopher (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Skylab E.P. (Audio CD)
OK. I might be biased here but that seems to be the rule rather than the exception when it comes to this recently reformed quartet from Minneapolis. Having seen them live more times than I can remember, this band contiunes to rock me in that good-old-fashioned-way akin to a Southern Baptist Hoedown. No kidding. When Jefferson White steps to the mic and spins tales of deceptive televisions, falling space stations and that Minnesota roadside legend "The Worlds Largest Ball Of Twine" it sends shivers up my spine. Yes 5 songs is way too short, but, at the end of the day this CD will no doubt go down as the one which made the "Minneapolis Sound" vital and fun again. Just one listen to "I Robot" will have you humming Tim Crimsons' bass lick with overzealous joy. The emotional rocker "Better Than This" will make you want to become a rock star and "Jetpack" can make the most jaded anti-fun night club crowd jump for joy. Skylab the CD, unlike it's gravitationaly challanged counterpart, will continue in it's orbit for years to come! BUY IT NOW! ...

I can't argue with any of these other reviewers -- this band is outstanding, and so is their CD. The "Weezer meets Devo" description is pretty accurate for the music, throwing in a measure of Tron for the subject matter... good, crazy stuff!Definitely check out their live show -- I thought they were a gimmick band when they walked on stage, but they've got the chops and tunes to back up their appearance. And I've never seen a band incorporate pyro into their act in a bar as small as the one I saw them at...

This band is fantastic to see live but their music is well worth getting this CD for. This is a great EP and a "must" for any good CD collection. Buy it! You won't regret it.

Futureistic MN Rock!,

This CD does not do this great band any justice! Although the music on the CD is great, their live performances are truly what they are known for. But as for "Skylab," it has a Cheap Trick feel to it, sounding like a mix between Devo and Cheap Trick. Well worth a listen!

First rock album I've ever loved,
This review is from: Skylab E.P. (Audio CD)
I've never been much of a rock fan. My tastes tend to run to Jimmy Smith and Claude Bolling. I first heard Skylab in a friend's Volvo on my way to crew practice. Listen, this cd is freaking incredible. You need to own it. I listened to I, Robot something like 12 times in a row and haven't gotten tired of it. I'm sorry if I can't provide a more qualitative review, but I frankly don't know much to compare it to. Anyway's, it rocks. Buy it.

Weezer meets Devo meets the Cars,

Manplanet is one of the hottest new acts I have seen in years. I love their sound because it is interesting and fun and they don't take themselves so seriously. My main complaint is that I wish the CD had more tracks. I caught their show live a few months ago and they blew me away! Buy the CD, if you don't already own it, but also see them live if they pass through your town! You are going to want to catch them in a club before they start playing larger venues, which will probably happen sooner than they think!

Tip of the iceberg my friends....,

This album: incredible. Their other CD: heroin for your ears, mind, and mood. Totally addicting. It's the live shows however that complete the experience (their best stuff isn't even released yet and available only via live performances). Go the extra mile to see them, me thinks you shant be disappointed. Many tracks ooze with Weezer/Rentals influence, but distinctly different and I think exponentially better. manplanet.net lists the forthcoming shows......see you there!

Great Live Band!,

I saw these guys play in WI and loved their performance. If you get a chance to see them, do! They sound sweet and innocent, like Weezer with a more spaced out tone. The lyrics are spacey and really easy to listen to. I love the colors and hope you like it as much as I do! Although there are only 5 songs, go ahead and buy it! You won't regret it, I promise!
