Good Annie Ross swinger...,
This review is from: Skylark (Audio CD)
Here is Annie Ross with a small jazz combo swingin', as she should be. Here she covers some jazz standards and some torch songs. This CD is an exact re-issie of the lp from the early 50's. Though not on the same level as her great LP "Sings A Song With Mulligan" which at present isn't available on CD, it's the next best thing. At least we have almost all of her recordings with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross in print(accept "Sing Along with Basie). Recomended.

A great small group jazz date with Annie Ross,
This review is from: Skylark (Audio CD)
Annie sounds great here interacting with small jazz groups, she sings Skylark and a few other standards. Fans of teh great singer will enjoy this wonderfu ljazz set. Although Ross mostly plays it straight here(unlike her more adventurous work with Lambert, Hendricks & Ross), she does improvise lightly. You wil lenjoy this, Ross never recoreded anything bad back in the 60's/60's. Though don't expect any vocalese here.

Recordings by Annie Ross on her own are hard to find but when they are unearthed they are real gems. This one, recorded in 1952 is quite unpretentious and simply good jazz singing. Her voice has just a hint of the roughness that sometimes characterises female jazz singers and this plus her phrasing and sense of the song makes for an excellent recording.

I owned a vinyl of this on the old Pye Golden Guinea Label in the 50's. What a joy to be able to purchase this again. The music to me has not dated one bit . What a singer.

I found this dvd by accident. I'm not a fan of most jazz, but her voice was so beautiful, I bought it. It's now one of my favorites! She sings about "Paris in the Springtime", but she could be singing about the broccoli at Wal-Mart, and it would still be worth hearing.

Ms. Ross' vocals are outstanding in this platter. It's a must-have for jazz aficionados...or for lovers of female singers, period. The easy swing and relaxed tempos really high-light her sensual renditions of some classic tunes, like "I Love Paris" and "I Didn't Know About You." It's a totally classic and classy outing for Ms. Ross.
