Skylink 18TR Garage Door Remote Control

The title is quoted from Skylink support, their words exactly, "...the Homelink remote system is not compatible to the Skylink model 18TR."

Homelink is another brand and is not associated with Skylink. That said, Homelink works with many garage door openers, and so its a fair question to ask if Skylink works with Homelink.

If you hoped to use the Skylink "rolling code" technology with a Homelink "rolling code" system common in 100's of auto brands, too bad it won't work. Homelink is the technology behind the 3-buttons usually found on the rear-view mirror or just above the mirror on many newer models, e.g. my 2005 Honda Accord has the Homelink system built in. The Skylink receiver (the part of the system inside the garage) is incompatible with a Homelink transmitter in the car - I guess you could say they don't talk the same "rolling code". When Skylink claims they work with most garage door openers, they do but only in the most simple way. Their receiver is wired in parallel with the existing push-button switch inside the garage, it becomes an alternate switch for your garage door opener. Don't buy this Skylink system, if you are thinking like I did that "rolling code" is "rolling code" and you will be able to use the Homelink garage door opener in your car because its "rolling code", it will not work. Instead to open the garage door using Skylink you will have to carry a separate Skylink transmitter. Ironically my built-in Homelink system will also works with my older remote garage door opener that doesn't use "rolling code".

I did read extensively before I bought this unit to see if there were problems like the one I'm describing. I was looking specifically for "rolling code" technology because it is much safer and harder to break than older garage door remote systems. Unfortunately for me, the Skylink documentation was silent on this limitation, and no one had yet written it up. Otherwise the Skylink system works, but what a missed opportunity ... the Homelink system is very nice, common on many autos and does work with most newer and older garage door openers.

We had one garage door that had an older off brand opener and another newer one that we could only get the remote to work every once and a while or we had to be in the garage to use it. This device works great and was very easy to hookup. Both work flawlessly and I have not had any issues with them in the year that I have had it. I can open the garage door from about 50 feet away with no issues. The other added benefit is now the older garage door has the rolling codes to make it more secure since I disabled the receiver on the opener.

It took me only a few minutes to install and replace a broken Sears Craftsman receiver and remote. This device was exactly what I needed at a great price. Considering most of the other replacement remotes were priced way above this unit and only included the remote and not the receiver, this is a bargain.

I only ding it by one star because the HomeLink unit in my car seems to be unable to learn the rolling code so I have to keep the remote in the car, but that was also the case with my last crufty remove/receiver so I am no worse off than I was before.

This is an excellent alternative to the typical universal remote control, which often will not work with older garage door openers that lack dip switches. After a 5-minute installation, this remote bypasses the standard remote, working through the doorbell-type switch mounted on the garage wall. Hence, this remote is TRULY universal. The range is good, and the compact size make it usable on a key chain.

I have a Stanley garage door opener which is no longer manufactured, and of course no parts or support are available. the Skylink took about ten minutes to install, and it works perfectly. A nice cheap fix.

Skylink came up with a simple solution to a nagging problem. Their transmitter-receiver combo is nothing less than spectacular. The receiver is a simple on-off switch that's controlled by the fob remote which can easily be programed for two receivers. Two sets of these little gems will actuate two separate garage doors with the ability of operating either door independently from each of the two fobs. I'm able to open my door from well over 100 feet away. This is a simple, inexpensive solution to any application requiring an on-off remote switch but is especially adapt to garage doors.

Easy to install and works fine.

Home Depot sells Universal remotes, I never could get any universal remote to work with my opener.

This unit works off the interior circuit for your existing button opener next to the garage door ..Installation is easy and fast.

Skylink came out with a great alternative to other products.

This remote installed easily and works perfectly. I now have the remote on my motorcycle keychain, and don't have it dangling from the brake line like my old, bulky remote.

Product arrived on time. Took it out of the package and installed it in less then 15 minutes. The installation was so easy. It works perfectally and the price was right.

It takes about 5 minutes to install this device. It works like a dream. Lost the remote to a rental house and bought this item. Problem solved.
