Skylink Garage Door Opener
Model EQ-1522BK
At a Glance:

  • Quiet 1/2 Horsepower DC Motor
  • Soft Start, Soft Stop Operation
  • Belt Drive
  • 2 x 2 Button Keychain Remote Control
  • Keyless Entry System
  • Infrared Safety Beam Sensor

DC-Motor: Soft Start, Soft Stop

When comparing to AC motors, DC motors provide much quieter operation. One major advantage is the speed of the DC motor with adjustable soft start, soft stop operation. It allows the door to be opened slowly then accelerate to full speed, when it is about to stop, it will slow down before coming to a complete stop. This reduces mechanical wear and tear for all the hardware of the garage door.

Belt Drive

Skylink Belt drive garage door openers features super quiet and smooth operation. The belt drive uses a flexible rubber belt to open and close the garage door. This reduces vibrations and eliminates noise. They are the perfect choice for homes with a living space above or next to the garage.

Optimal Force Setting

The force adjustment controls the pressure to open and close the garage door. Skylink garage door openers provide an automatic force setting adjustment to ensure it is always operating at the optimal force setting.

Infrared Safety Sensor and Built-in Force Sensing

Safety is not only your concern, it is our concern too. To protect you and your loved ones, our safety infrared sensor will monitor any obstacle while the door is closing. If an obstacle is blocking the infrared beam, the door will stop immediately and reverse. The same applies when a obstacle makes contact with the door, once the internal force sensing detection is activated, it will stop the door from closing and reverse.

Mini Keychain Remote with Visor Clip

Skylink EQ-1522BK comes with 2 Mini Keychain Remote with Visor Clips. You can use it as a keychain or attached it to the sun visor of your vehicle. It operates with rolling code technology, meaning a code is generated that is different from the previous code. With 2 buttons, you can use the remote to operate up to 2 Skylink garage door openers.

Deluxe Wall Console

Deluxe Wall Console with multiple functions:

  1. Door Open / Close
  2. Light On / Off
  3. Vacation Lock to disable all wireless device operation.
Keyess Entry System

With the Keyless Entry System, you can operate the garage door opener without having to carry a remote control. Ideal for kids coming back from school or when you don't have a remote control, you can always have access to the garage with a 6 digit PIN code. One Skylink Keyless Entry System can operate up to 4 Skylink garage door openers.

I purchased this Skylink opener to replace my 10-yr old Chamberlain opener. The reason I purchased this Skylink unit is because it says it is very quite and has a belt instead of a chain. I shopped around at several local hardware stores like Home Depot and Lowes, for one that is similar to this one and with all the options, other brands seemed to cost over $200. So I decided to go with this one.

First surprise was how small the opener is when I first opened the box. The kit comes with two infrared sensors, two remote controls and a keypad that is good for my kids so they don't need to carry additional keys or a remote. Installation was not difficult and the instructions were clear enough. I had my buddy come over to help me and it took us around 1.5 hours to put this thing up. Once it was powered, I was amazed at how quiet it was. It is much different than my Chamberlain in terms of "noise". We also have a family room above the garage and we no longer hear anything anymore when someone opens the garage. It is also nice to watch how it slows down the door before coming to a stop.

I like how tiny the remotes are and they fit well as a keyfob. The keypad is like any ordinary keypad, punch in the code and the door opens. One thing that I noticed during the installation is that I don't need to set the force and according to the manual, this is done automatically. With the pervious Chamberlain unit, I had to adjust this force from time to time. Sometimes it would not open the door fully so I had to increase the force setting. But I guess technology nowadays is much improved, so I don't even have to worry about the force setting with this new opener.

I purchased two of these garage door openers based on the feedback I read here on Amazon. It is true that it is compact and yes, the unit is very quiet. In addition it is visually appealing for being a garage door opener. So what are the problems then that caused me to give it two stars? They are all installation related and as of this writing not operation related.

1.- The unit comes with every imaginable warning sticker to please the attorneys in case the company gets sued. These warning stickers are translated meticulously to Spanish and the amount of warning and caution related addendum fliers is just ridiculous. May I ask the managers in Skylink, why wasn't the same amount of effort put into accurately documenting the installation and configuration of the product?

2.- Documentation is vague, poorly designed and not accurate. It includes setup instructions for a chain guided model of Skylink and not the rubber belt version. Also near zero chance of figuring out the keyless remote keypad that comes with it. This is an absolute complete disaster to a product documentation! Whomever did that should be ashamed and consider changing occupation.

3.- The rail is constructed of 2 foot long pieces that do not fit 100% accurately together. This is a problem because if you do not take a metal file and start adjusting it, the carriage will snag when under pressure.

Based on this experience I cannot recommend this product and sadly for Skylink they lost not just me as a customer, but every person I will have the opportunity to share my experience with.

-- Update May 20, 2014 --

What an engineering disaster this is. The garage door engine stopped working. I disconnected the belt from the engine just to ensure it is not the cause of the problem and the engine still does not turn around. I can hear a noise trying to engage, but the shaft is ceased up.

I picked this unit for the 5 star reviews and how quiet it is advertised.

FACT: It is very quiet. A+ for quiet.

1) The instructions that ship with it are for the chain drive. I bought a belt drive. Chains isn't the same as a belt. I contacted customer service and asked for instructions for the belt drive, as the two models are not identical, and instructions for installing the belt don't match installing the chain. Much to my demise, customer service told me the two are the same. After some time, I was able to figure out that the grey thing in the middle of the belt had to be placed with a certain side facing UP and be located on a certain side of the center bar. That's 4 possible alignments!!! Not the same as a belt. Fact. :-(

2) Several instruction sets were included. The first instruction set I found was the "cliff notes version" (a short 2 page insert) so that's what I used - mistake. The instructions for programming the travel distance in the "cliff notes version" are incorrect; but they are correct in the full instruction manual.

3) The remote only works from 4 feet away - or less. Since my car is greater than 4 feet away when the garage door is closed and my car is not in the garage, this basically makes it impossible for me to use a remote to enter my garage. Isn't that the point of a garage door opener?

4) Travel distance varies. Sometimes the door closes nice & tight, sometimes it closes with 1/2 an inch between the door and the floor. Unacceptable.

I've installed other garage door openers, and this one is the worst. I'll take a reliable noisy one over this hunk of junk any day. I have plans of returning this.
