Send cheap SMS to mobiles and call landlines at great Skype rates while you're on the move. You love using Skype on your personal computer; imagine the power of Skype on your Android smartphone.

Great Long-Distance Rates

With Skype for Android, you have the same benefits that you get from Skype on your home computer. This app features Skype's low rates for phone calls to global landlines and mobiles. You can stop worrying over your plan's minutes. Skype global calls don't use your wireless plan minutes. Simply pay-as-you-go with Skype Credit or get a monthly subscription for the best rates.

Import your contacts list
Free Phone Calls

You can make that phone call for free if your contact has a Skype account. Free Skype-to-Skype calls also don't use up your minutes. And as long as you are signed in to the Skype application, you can receive Skype calls on your Android phone. Set up call fowarding as well.

Keep in touch with old friends
Free Instant Messaging

Add all your friends to the same instant message (IM) conversation and decide on the time and place for your Saturday night without all the e-mails and phone tag. See when people are online and get instant answers to quick questions with Skype Instant Messenger, whether your colleagues are next door or on the other side of the world. Instant Messages are free with all your Skype contacts.

Video Calls

Skype's free video-calling service is also available for compatible devices. See your family and friends' smiles and expressions as you chat over Skype's high-quality video stream. To make video calls, you need an Android phone with a front-facing camera and chipset with NEON technology support that is running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or above.

Please note: Due to Android restrictions, devices running Android 2.2 will only be able to use the rear-facing camera. Devices with Android 2.3 or higher will be able to use both front and rear-facing cameras. Additional operator data charges may apply; check with your phone carrier for details or use a Wi-Fi connection. Be sure to enable your front-facing camera before launching video calling.

Skype for Android Features:
  • Free instant messaging, Group IM, and Skype SMS
  • Free Skype-to-Skype calling
  • Free Skype video calls (on select phones that can support video with a front-facing camera)
  • Call landlines and mobile phones with low Skype rates instead of your plan's minutes
  • Receive Skype calls and calls to online numbers
  • Participate in conference calls
  • Synchronize with Android and native contacts

1.0 out of 5 stars Skype is NOT For Tablets October 1, 2012
Verified Purchase
I have a 7" EMATIC e-Glide Steal that comes with a forward facing camera. This is what I tried to download and use SKYPE on. For some reason SKYPE works great on my laptop and it worked great on my old desktop, but the tablet is another story. It seems to see the tablet as a telephone and refuses to access the camera. I tried to use my current account, which it could not recognize on the tablet; I tried to set up a new account, which it refused to see as anything except a telephone, so I gave up and deleted it. Maybe it is the hardware that poses a problem, I don't know, but in my opinion SKYPE is not the same on a tablet as it is on your PC. Be warned to avoid the frustration I went through.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! October 9, 2011
By Chexy
I have the Samsung Epic Galaxy 4G and it works just fine on my phone. You just gotta remember that just like with any phone you're using a program and if you're in a bad area with spotty reception it's going to be laggy just like anything else would be.

Chat works fantastic, Calling does what its supposed to do albeit a little laggy sometimes with the newer updates. Much better than my experiences with Tango or Oovoo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Skype video calls December 3, 2012
Verified Purchase
It's ok, but video calls are jerky, lagging, even a I5 16gb memory pc's, and Vizio, Android tablets with 32Gb memory, all having access to a 30+ cable speed network. But it's a novelty.

We used Skype for years and appreciated that it was the 'original'. So when it came time to find an international calling service to keep in contact with our family member overseas, Skype was the natural choice. Unfortunately, the service failed miserably. First, you must purchase a subscription...seems like it makes sense, except that you must use your minutes each month or lose them. Unless you know exactly how long you're going to talk, you're better off finding a plan that charges by the actual minutes used.
However, more importantly than this, it simply did not really work. Our first call went through and the quality was decent. However, we were never able to make any calls to the same number after that. When I tried to reach customer service, I discovered that you had to go through about 5 layers of FAQs before you could finally choose to either 'live chat' with a rep or send an email. The 1st rep said we had tried to call when the line was busy; we accepted that explanation and tried luck. This time, we had a back up plan and used another service - Bingo, no problem connecting! Guess it wasn't busy after all, just crappy service from Skype.
The kicker is that we were unable to get a refund for the unused minutes (even though we could never actually use them because the calls wouldn't go through) because that's their "policy".
Oh, and the single text we attempted to send never went through at all.
Oops, almost forgot one other thing - I attempted to cancel the subscription on-line and it appeared that I had been successful but, lo and behold, when the next billing cycle came along, we were auto billed for another month. Fortunately, we were able to get out of that and finally cancel because we hadn't used a single minute. Come to think of it, we probably couldn't have used any even if we had tried!
Bottom line: buyer beware...wasted money, unreliable service and no recourse if you aren't satisfied except to cancel service!

1.0 out of 5 stars skype doesn't work on new Fire!!! November 20, 2011
By James
If Amazon doesn't enable the new Fire to work with a headset mic and Skype there will be lots of returns; we can do without a video camera. I was told by an Amazon rep that it would work with skype but that wasn't the case when I got it. Too bad.... It is a great product otherwise, and I would probably buy one for each member of the family!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Well on the Samsung Galaxy SIII December 11, 2012
Verified Purchase
It allows my daughter to see her grandparents who live halfway across the state. It also allows me to use a skype number as a Home phone, and a decent IM client, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Seems to Work Well..... January 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
I have only used Skype several times for video calls, but it appears to work seamlessly and smoothly. When installed. it configured itself automatically to my tablet's mic, speakers, WiFi & camera and worked well on the first call. The only reason I didn't give it five stars at this time is that I had to stumble through the menus and selections to find the features and actions I wanted.

I am having the same issue! I am so annoyed with this as their cousins moved away and that was how they got to stay in contact with them. I am really unhappy with Skype right now.
