Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Fourth of July is fast approaching Cobtown in Julia and Robert Van Nutt's latest installment, Skyrockets and Snickerdoodles. When a mouse eats the Cobtown markings, leaving a hole in a historic map, surveyors arrive to rename the town Carbuncle. Luckily, a holiday game of baseball uncovers the town marker and saves the day.

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-This volume in the series describes the celebration of the Fourth of July, 1845, as told through the diary of 10-year-old Lucky Hart. Fireworks, baseball, and snickerdoodles (recipe included) are a part of the festivities. The excitement culminates as a wandering goat's hefty appetite leads to the resolution of a town mystery. Van Nutt's newspaper endpapers and full-page acrylic folk-art paintings opposite pages of handwritten text join forces with spot cartoons of grumpy town officials and female baseball players to create a colorful, visually appealing book. Older readers will hone in on several subtle jokes, such as the opposing team's name, Ploomajiggy Unbeatables, thus P.U. on their uniforms. A quick, fun frolic.
