Editorial Reviews

ANDERS PARKER is a singer/songwriter from Burlington, VT. Fourteen years into his career we are proud to announce the release of his twelfth album - the double concept album Skyscraper Crow. The Crow portion of the set is unadorned acoustic folk simplicity at it's finest while Skyscraper is totally computer generated laptop pop. The albums are, at least aesthetically, diametrically opposed, but they are distinctly the work of Parker.

In 2008 ANDERS PARKER moved to Burlington, VT after a number of years in New York City. There he relegated himself to a subterranean basement where he finished work on a series of 4 disparate albums. These records starkly represent 4 different directions of his artistic compass - one acoustic folk, another electronic pop, a third of improv guitar instrumental noise-scapes and the last a rock band barn burner.

Skyscraper Crow is the first installment from the project with the others to follow suit shortly thereafter. Says PARKER, ''Skyscraper is my love/hate letter to New York and my life there'' adding, ''I would create a drum beat and lay down a chord structure in one sitting, then I'd ride the subway for as long as it took to write the lyrics. Then, my friend, Kendall Meade (Mascott), came over and sang background vocals on most of Skyscraper.''

PARKER wrote Crow at the end of 2008 in Burlington after he had finished Skyscraper. ''With Crow, I was trying to create small little worlds with each song. I had just moved into my new home on a block surrounded in every direction by squawking crows. The house has a perfect basement for recording, one where you can watch dust float in intense rays of dream light'' recollects PARKER.

Before recording under his own name, PARKER performed in the indy-rock/alt-country act Varnaline and played in the space-rock band Space Needle. PARKER's career has seen him tour with the likes of Bob Mould, Son Volt, Sparklehorse, and The Verses as well as Lollapallooza 1997. In 2006, ANDERS released an album that he recorded with Son Volt and Uncle Tupelo founder, Jay Farrar, under the name Gob Iron. Entitled Death Songs for the Living, the record was series of folk songs reinterpreted by the duo.

I'm a long time Anders Parker fan, through many incarnations, bands, team ups, musical stylings, etc. He's an artist who's been round so long and who's grown up before our eyes. Seems to me, no matter your tastes, Parker's catalog, given his creativity and longevity, will have something to entice or appease you or anyone else. I could be wrong but the first disc probably reflects a lot of what was going on around him as he was preparing to exit NYC,,, LCDSoundsystem's maturing, the no longer new Brooklyn bohemia and an excitement over the possibilities afforded by his toe dipping into electronica ambiance. This struck me as odd, but some of my smarter friends who'd 'pretofore' struck me as rootsy, rustic types really enjoyed disc 1. I think among the early, catchy songs mentioned by the first reviewer, "Farewell Old Love," is beautiful and a perfect way to wrap up a slowly entrancing work. Disc 2 is great, something truly rootsy and rustic for the old fans, plus something to send to any Canadian buds. As said, I'm admittedly a long time Parker fan and can see someone having a kinda WTF reaction to these discs or this post after hearing these discs for the first time. But really, I've had Skyscraper-Crow since it first came out and even now, a couple years later or more, I'm still finding new treasures within. I'm not sure even I was ready for them at the time, but find new ways to appreciate both discs, even now. Might not be an appropriate introduction into his catalog, but if you find yourself a fan of even some of this mysterious artist's myriad incarnations, these discs add a new facet of growth to the crystal goodness that is Anders Parker.

2.0 out of 5 stars Lackluster Album with Artist Potential October 22, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Skyscraper Crow is the double album from Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Anders Parker. Disc one (Skyscraper) is a subtle techno-pop album that sounds like it belongs in the 80s. You can see The Smiths influence here,
with Parkers' vocals sounding like a mix between Howard Jones and The Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid. However, the vocals are perhaps the only interesting aspect of Skyscraper. Even remotely catchy songs like "Calling Out to You" and "Slow Clouds" are lackluster, making the entire disc seem void of point and substance.

Luckily, Disc two (Crow) takes a break from the electronics, focusing instead on a theme of relaxing, folk-like acoustics.
