I am torn on how to review this album. I think it deserves three and a half stars, so I'm rounding up, but I'm afraid that when I say it's not perfect, the Cuddy fangirls are going to come after me. And I am one. Luckily, most of them will have to cross the border to come find me.

I love Jim's music with Blue Rodeo, and can listen to it all the time (and frequently do). For instance, I've sung "Head Over Heels" at karaoke in Cambridge, Massachusetts! The first chorus of "Dragging On" is tied for my favorite "musical moment (with lyrics)" of all time, with the bridge of "Long Way Back Home" by Barenaked Ladies. I absolutely adore "Trust Yourself" live. I'm still kicking myself for missing Blue Rodeo the last time they were in town. I haven't seen them in concert in over six years.

However, I can't listen to his solo music without a massive crush on him. Then I'm feeling, umm, charitable and can say "Jim Cuddy has a definite style to his solo songwriting" rather than "All of Jim Cuddy's solo music sounds the same and I can hear his songs blend into one another when I listen to more than one at a time." I'm not sure whether it's the instrumentation or the amount of creative freedom or other factors, but, for example, when I listened to the title track off "The Light That Guides You Home" for the second time, it started to sound like "Trouble" off "All in Time." Then I realized that basically every song he writes sounds like those two.

Furthermore, I really don't like his slow tunes. While I recently lost a family member, "Pull Me Through" still makes me gag, and while it's Blue Rodeo and not solo, don't even get me started on "Bulletproof."

This leads me to the title track of the album I'm supposed to be reviewing.

I can't disagree with previous comments that Cuddy's music "sounds the same" but then you could also call that his style, which I happen to like. It's also true his writing tends to be a bit mournful (it must be the long cold winters) but again, it's as advertised. I don't understand the comment about a song not on the CD - that seems more of a listing error (or a purchasing error) and these ratings are for the product - not the purchase experience (you rate the seller on that separately).

Anyway - I think this is his best solo album, stretching the sound a bit with trumpet featured and I love the interaction guitar/organ/trumpet. I'm more into the music than the lyrics. As I say - you want poetry, buy a poetry book :-)

Music was good but the track that I was interested in was not on this CD. A wonderful talent, thank you.
