A Pure Delight,
This review is from: Skywriting at Night (Paperback)
If you want to have some great offbeat fun, this is the book for you. A very different plot, very different characters, and a fast-paced style make "Skywriting" hard to put down. I couldn't wait to see what Jet would do next -- what trouble he would get himself, his friends and the town into -- and looked forward to the laughs and smiles on my face as the story progressed. I hope to see a follow-up with even more zany antics. For the open-minded reader, "Skywriting" is a winner!

Mad Dog, the syndicated columnist who keeps us in stitches with his humorous columns, treats us to a gem. His insights into the world of testosterone poisoned adolescence delight the senses and tickle the funny bone. Characterization is extremely vivid, rich and satisfying. Mad Dog fans should demand that he end his globetrotting and settle down to start his next novel. We're hungry for more.

A friend read this at a website and turned m e onto it. I bought one of the first copies, then bought two more to give to friends. That's the highest recommendation I can give ANY book!

"Skywriting at Night" is nothing short of a delight. It's one of the most unique, fun and enjoyable books I've read in a long time. One minute I was laughing so loud my wife thought I'd lost it and the next I was marveling at the insights into people and their foibles. And boy, do his characters have foibles!Jet's a 12 year old boy who takes advantage of circumstance to relieve his boredom, becoming the catalyst that stirs up an entire town and along with it a national tabloid. The inner workings of the newspaper, The Weekly World Scene, may be the best example of tabloid absurdity imaginable, but I wouldn't doubt if it's the way they really work. The book takes adolescent confusion, mixes it with family dysfunction, and drops in a big dose of religious soul searching (looking for salvation in all the wrong places) to create a world that draws us in and keeps us there. I hate to make comparisons since Mad Dog has an incredibly unique voice and skewed way of looking at life, but if you enjoy writers like John Irving, Tom Robbins, Kurt Vonnegut and John Barth you'll love "Skywriting at Night." It's one of those books you don't want to see end. I hope to spend time with these characters again.

If all fiction were this good, I'd give up my propensity for non-fiction. This is fiction, isn't it, Mad Dog?

I stumbled across Mad Dog quite by accident while learning howto use the Internet in school... I haven't laughed this hard in QUITEa while! I will probably get this hard copy for myself when I get my post graduate job. Mad Dog is consistently funny. ( ) He is a columnist in the Art Buchwald tradition, with his skewed view of life. A funny, funny guy! END

Mad Dog captures a wonderful mix of humor, reality and solid storytelling in Skywriting at Night. Mad Dog's years as a humor columnist did not force this novel into an episodic no-plot piece of garbage as all too often happens with modern media artists. Instead you find this compelling work that makes you think about everything, the meaning of the title, your life and how good it feels to read and reread a good book. He's an artful writer, easily bringing characters to life. I reccommend this book to everyone from the avid reader to the casual Sunday skimmer. I personally guarantee that you will not be able to put this book down until you've finished turning the last page.

I read this book at Mad Dog's web site and I have to admit, I never thought I'd read a whole book on a computer but I did! It was completely absorbing, fun, and my husband kept asking me what I was laughing at so I had to read parts to him. I'm just glad it's in print so hopefully more people will get to find out how wonderful this book is.

The characters come alive. When finished, you wonder what other mischief Jet can cause on his small-insulated town.
