-- Teaches editing, typesetting, and graphical user interfaces
-- Discusses Linux for programmer's and system administrators
-- CD-ROM includes powerful source code and two best-selling books in HTML format
Programmers will love this book, as it pays adequate attention to C, C++, Perl, tcl/tk, and a score of other languages. Granted, this section of the book won't teach you how to write C programs, but it will help you figure out what's unique about C and other languages under Slackware Linux. Another section of the book covers advanced programming topics, such as writing network applications under Linux. Online services (including mail, news, FTP, WAIS, Gopher, and the Web) are well documented, and security is discussed, though that's not this book's strongest suit.
Slackware Linux Unleashed wraps up with capsule documentation of many utilities, productivity applications, and games. The companion CD-ROM includes Slackware Linux 3.1 (not the latest release), XFree86 3.2, some compilers, the complete GNU archive, and a book about CGI programming that is in HTML.

Lots of information; poor organization,
By A Customer
This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
This book contains alot of useful information on installing, configuring and using Linux. The organization of the book, however, could be better. The book jumps around in many places. Some of the early chapters reference things from the later ones. The information is there but you'll have to dig. Overall though, I would rate this as a good book to have. Whether you are a first time Linux user or an experienced kernal hacker, this book contains useful information. Plus it comes with a CD with the Slackare Linux release.

So Close...,

The book is a good one, and it possesses the mother-load of information to be expected from a Slackware Book. Unfortunately, the book spends much to much time on advanced topics that noobs have very little information on. It talks about Advanced Perl scripting, when the user only wants to know how to use different fonts.
Not for noobs. Then again, slackware never was. :D

Actually ... this one had a bit of disappointment going into all the gui / motif programming; but that's partially due to the year it was printed ... but also ... it was written by someone who's proud to be affiliated with SCO ... but times were different when this was written so I won't judge it on that ... but i've also put this one on the back-burner just to due to the way SCO has treated the development community in whole ... so its hard to give any opinion of this
