Lots of information; poor organization,
By A Customer
This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
This book contains alot of useful information on installing, configuring and using Linux. The organization of the book, however, could be better. The book jumps around in many places. Some of the early chapters reference things from the later ones. The information is there but you'll have to dig. Overall though, I would rate this as a good book to have. Whether you are a first time Linux user or an experienced kernal hacker, this book contains useful information. Plus it comes with a CD with the Slackare Linux release.

So Close...,
By JoseLuis Nunez "LeekOS" (Argentina) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
The book is a good one, and it possesses the mother-load of information to be expected from a Slackware Book. Unfortunately, the book spends much to much time on advanced topics that noobs have very little information on. It talks about Advanced Perl scripting, when the user only wants to know how to use different fonts.
Not for noobs. Then again, slackware never was. :D

Actually ... this one had a bit of disappointment going into all the gui / motif programming; but that's partially due to the year it was printed ... but also ... it was written by someone who's proud to be affiliated with SCO ... but times were different when this was written so I won't judge it on that ... but i've also put this one on the back-burner just to due to the way SCO has treated the development community in whole ... so its hard to give any opinion of this

Slackware Linux Released: Very Comprehensive,
By A Customer
This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
Slackware Linux Release is a very comprehensive book covering much of the topic. I thought it was an exceptional book! I successfully installed in an older X386 33MHz machine. Initial install isn't exactly automatic but is manageable for one with reasonable computer skills. Book not only covers basics but is also good for intermediate use and as a general UNIX reference. Browsing through other books on the topic, I would strongly recommend this book as well as the Slackware distribution of Linux that comes with it.

Not very good for beginners,
By A Customer
This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
The book's best point was the copy of Linux that came with it. There wasn't too much there as far as teaching you how to use Linux unless you already had a bit of knowlege of Unix/Linux Commands. On a positve side, the last few chapters about network programming in C were quite helpful to a beginner in that area...

This book is a very good book for beginners, it explains the basics in Linux and also goes in-depth on some subjects, it's easy enough for beginners and advanced enough for intermediated. Although the book is about one year old it has not yet become outdated. A Good buy!

This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
This is an exalant book!!!!!! Although it says slackware this only pertains to the installtion, the rest of the book is great for any linux system, it covered everything that I ever wanted to know about my Linux system. This book is great for someone who was a "advanced user" in dos or windows before and now wants better performace out of their computer. I found this book to be great reading too, not to much tech. info that it makes your head explode, but advanced enough to get lots of work done!! This is just a great book for any linux user

Well rounded and good introduction to Linux,
By A Customer
This review is from: Slackware Linux Unleashed (Paperback)
This book is well rounded and contains many examples and options. It comes with lots of software(although some outdated) and provides a great stepping stone to Linux and Unix Operating Systems. I would recommend it for the begginer and even the casual user. It also has a good manual that covers basic utilities that are used every day.
