5.0 out of 5 stars THEY GOT IT RIGHT!!!, November 12, 2006
This review is from: Slade Box (Audio CD)
This is really a nice box set. The sound is crisp(unlike last year's 2-disc collection), the book is great & all the charting singles are here. I also like the fact that the full-length version of "Run Runaway" was used instead of the single edit. Of course, this is probably more Slade than most people need, but better too much than not enough! Even though this is an import, you can find it for a good price if you shop around.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply definitive., January 29, 2008

This is the definitive compilation of Slade, a great British rock band that never made it big in the US.

With an incredible 84 tracks divided into four CD's, it has it all: all of their numer one hits (in the UK), a lot of greta B-sides and all of the stronger songs in each album; The quality of the booklet is flawless, as also is the text.

YOu can't go wrong: it has ballads, rocking songs, keyboards, acustic guitars, displaying all the quality of thisphenomenal quartet that only now begin to get the praise they deserve.

4.0 out of 5 stars Okay, It's A Great Set But You STILL Have To Buy KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF MY POWER SUPPLY, March 21, 2009

Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply was one of the best albums of 1984. When everyone else was playing around with New Wave Slade were still rocking out. The whole album smokes and includes my two favorite Slade tracks of all time - High And Dry and In The Dog House. These were inexplicably left off this collection (along with Cheap 'N Nasty Luv - another classic - for the only two Power Supply tracks I don't like!

Okay, so get the Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply CD, THEN this box set. Eventually you'll get the itch for even more Slade and that's when you go for the Slade In Flame DVD - a pretty authentic look at the music business of the time with the band even broadcasting from one of England's pirate offshore radio stations before they were shut down. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars One Great Set, July 20, 2010

I had this in my wishlist for awhile only because I didn't have the extra money to spend at the time I had found it. I had viewed youtube videos of live performances and went looking for a compilation. This is it. If you wonder whether you should get this, the answer is: yes. I had only had Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply from the time they had hit in America. I knew that Quiet Riot had used some of their songs to launch their career. I was amazed that after QR had made it big that it didn't expose more Slade in the US.
You'll catch yourself wanting to sing along with the chorus' as they come up. You can see the crowds singing along at the concerts. This compilation covers the beginning to the end very chronologically as many comps don't. Ending with Universe which was their last release. I recently was playing it at low volume when a friend was riding with me, and he didn't like it. This is a good thing because he is a very narrow minded person and is only interested in his own musical genre, which is very limited.
The price is very good for the amount of music you receive. The booklet that comes with it is a great compliment. As of this writing, I currently have disc 4 in my truck player and this set has been what I've been toggling back and forth with the radio for over a month.

I've loved Slade since I first heard the "Slayed?" album when I was a kid in the 70's. This box is GREAT! Lots of cool tracks and photos. I can't wait for the rest of the reissues!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE MOST UNDERRATED BAND IN ROCK HISTORY!! (if you're an american, that is.), December 14, 2011

it's a twist of fate worthy of Rod Serling: in their native U.K. they were so ubiquitous, so unstoppably successful, that they're still occasionally referred to on that side of the Atlantic as "the Beatles of the '70s." yet they slipped under our radar almost completely. what they're best known for in the States (what they sometimes seem to be known for PERIOD in the States) is writing what turned out to be the two big hits for Quiet Riot. (the "experts" tend to "explain" that Slade were "too British" for America, but i always wonder, why didn't being British hurt The Beatles, Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Elton John, The Who...? why weren't Rush "too Canadian" or Men At Work "too Austrailian," for that matter?)
THE SLADE BOX amply and powerfully demonstrates just what we "yanks" have been missing. you'll find all the hits we should've heard - "Cum On Feel The Noize," "Mama Weer All Crazee Now," "Far Far Away," "Gudbuy T'Jane," "Look Wot You Dun," "How Does It Feel?," "My Friend Stan," "Merry Xmas Everybody" (the "White Christmas" of Europe) (seriously) - as well as their two brief squeaks onto the American charts, "Run Runaway" and "My Oh My." less familiar but equally worthy "album tracks" display Beatles-esque whimsy ("In For A Penny," "Wonderin' Y"), Beastie Boys-esque debauchery ("You Boyz Make Big Noize"), SoCal cool ("Let's Call It Quits," "L.A. Jinx"), surprisingly poignant self-reflection ("Still The Same," "Sign Of The Times"), cool covers ("Born To Be Wild," "Shape Of Things To Come," "Wild Winds Are Blowing"), and just plain balls ("7 Year Bitch," the world's first - are you ready for THIS? - doo-wop power ballad). and how could you not love a cheesy title like "'Til Deaf Do Us Part"?
i'm particularly impressed with singer Neville "Noddy" Holder. if you asked me what kind of singer i fantasize being, my first instinct would be to say i wish i had an earthy blues voice like John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival, or Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. but i've also had moments of wishing for a voice with epic grandeur, like Freddie Mercury's or Meat Loaf's. well, Noddy Holder's pipes actually managed to have BOTH of those qualities. (don't ask me, because i wouldn't of thought it was humanly possible, either.)
i ultimately have only one qualm. why their banal stadium-rock version of "Okey-Cokey" ("Hoky-Poky" to you Americans), when we could've had, say, "Them Kinda Monkeys Can't Swing?" but that is the one and only blemish, i assure you.
i should warn my countrymen that THE SLADE BOX is only available in England, so it will take some time to arrive. Shout! Factory has a couple of single-disc complilations more readily available (GET YER BOOTS ON: THE BEST OF SLADE and IN FOR A PENNY: RAVES & FAVES). those are fine...if you're willing to live without gems like "Little Sheila," "Kill 'Em At The Hot Club Tonite," "Radio Wall Of Sound," "So Far So Good," "Nobody's Fool," "Give Us A Goal," "How Can It Be?," and "Can You Just Imagine?" the BOX is worth the wait.
(you might also want to check out their film, FLAME (a.k.a. SLADE IN FLAME), which shocked audiences expecting a romp a' la A HARD DAY'S NIGHT by turning out to be a frank reflection of the seedy underbelly of, well, the entertainment business in general, really. all great bands think outside the box, and you couldn't get much farther away from Slade's established box than the film does.)
so what're ya waitin' for? you still hold England's attempt to annex our 13 colonies against 'em?

Nice compellation of one of the influential Glam rock bands of the 70s. Look through the song listing to see how many of these cuts were later covered by the Hair bands of the 80s. Pay particular attention to the covers, especially "Move Over", "Born to Be Wild", and "Darling Be Home Soon".
