Slade and Kally, October 7, 2009
This review is from: Slade and Kally (Letting Go of the Reins) (Paperback)
Kally Jensen had taken the last beating from her husband Matt that she would ever suffer through. She was done. Matt had taken everything from her - her self-respect, her self worth, and her dignity. She knew that his beatings were escalating, and worried that next time might result in her death. Shakily Kally packed everything of worth into a suitcase, said goodbye to her sister Susan, and headed west. She was frightened about leaving Michigan because she had never lived anywhere else, but she was more afraid of staying. She decided her destination was going to be Wyoming to see her best friend Ilene Rogers. Beyond visiting Ilene, she had no idea what came next, but that was okay.
Slade Carlson was missing his life. He had given up a job he truly thought he was made for as a Hulett police officer to help his family on their ranch. While riding on the back eighty-one snowy night, he came upon an injured woman on the verge of hypothermia in the pond. His training kicked in, and he got her to the house for medical attention. Luckily he was able to get her to a hospital in Sundance just in time. Kally was banged up pretty severely, but one thing was abundantly clear. She didn't get all her injuries from an auto accident. Slade had been a cop too long to think those marks on her neck were from anything other than somebody's hands. Unconscious woman or not, he felt an overwhelming connection to her, and felt compelled to protect her.
Kally was as skittish as a newborn colt when she came to live at the ranch with Slade and his family. She found an immediate connection with his mother, but found out that she and her husband were leaving for a business trip. She would be alone with Slade, but was drawn to his kindness, and didn't fear him. As he drew her out of her shell, he discovered the feisty woman underneath waiting to find her footing. Slade has a close relationship with his neighbors, and as they all prepared for the holiday season, the threat to Kally was preparing for his bold entrance into her new life.
What a great story! The multi-layered character developed in Kally was very well written. She was such a broken woman when she came into Slade's life, but with his gentleness and kind heart, we got to see the Kally emerge that has been beaten back with abuse. The relationship that evolved between them was very sweet!

Great Love Story, January 22, 2010
Fantastic love story! A sweet, heart-warming story without being sappy. Set in the great state of Wyoming, Kally finds hope and love after running from an abusive relationship. I want a Slade of my own.

I really didn't care for this book. I found myself skipping pages just to get to the end. It was a tough read. I didn't care for the writing style. The story could have been written better.
