Book Description

Book 2 in the New Species series. The books can be read as stand-alone stories, but it is advisable to read them in order to get the most enjoyment from the series.

Dr. Trisha Norbit is flat on her back in a hospital bed, pinned under a really big New Species male. Though drugged out of his mind, he promises her ecstasy and is determined to deliver—but hospital staff intervenes. 215 is a man Trisha will never forget. But, when she meets him again at Homeland…he doesn’t even remember her!

The nosy new doctor wants to know all about the breeding habits between humans and Species. Slade proposes a hands-on education but she’s not interested in a one-night stand. He can’t offer more because he’s haunted by the memory of a woman he once tried to claim. He’s shocked when he realizes they are one and the same. He’s blown it—she’ll never give him a chance now.

But, when her life is in danger, he’s the only one who can save her. As they flee through the wilderness, their desire ignites and cannot be denied. Hot sex, on the run, has consequences that are even more dangerous and will change their lives forever.

Reader Advisory: There is a scene of an attempted rape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slade-another great read from Laurann August 29, 2011

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Trisha Norbert is an ER Trauma doctor, who has all of the same problems that the very smart people seem to have, going to college at a very young age which means she has few social skills. Her life has been all about school and studying. While in med school she worked in a vet clinic. She's not sure why that fact is suddenly important when there's an emergency in the ER. That's when she meets Slade, who is a New Species. New Species are men made from splicing human with animal DNA. He is a canine breed, who ends up on Trisha's exam table wounded when he and others like him are rescued from the lab that created them. She's curious about this man on the ER bed and leans over to take a closer look. He wakes up with her sweet smell in his nose and an over powering need for her, so he grabs her. Before things go too far and either one gives into their needs, help arrives and he is sedated and is taken out of her care. She can't forget him and when she sees that the New Species need a doctor at Homeland, the place given to them to live, she applies and is hired. When she gets there she meets Slade again but the only problem is Slade doesn't recognize her. He doesn't see that the woman he's been dreaming about, aching for since his stay in the hospital is standing right in front of him! And boy does that irritate the good doctor.

As characters, Trisha is a smart, sometimes funny woman, but at times seems a bit timid. But she's brave when she needs to be. She seems to do a slow burn to anger but boy when she does, duck and cover because words fly. Slade is at time arrogant, powerful, has a sense of humor and is loyal but he can be a bit of a jerk. He also shows that he can be vulnerable. As you learn more about his background, you understand the reasons for his behavior!

5.0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper! August 30, 2011

This is the second book in Laurann Dohner's New Species Series, and I loved this as much as the first installment. I couldn't put it down. I loved it so much I went snooping around her website to find out when the next book comes out. It's extremely sexy and the characters are endearing, and you will care about them a lot, at least I did. After reading this story I was day dreaming at work wishing I had one of those New Species Males, LOL. You have to read this book, because the more support she gets for this series the more she will write. She has plenty of interesting secondary characters who could surely get their own stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best entry in the series! August 23, 2012
By Fan
Format:Kindle Edition
After reading Fury I was surprised and extremely pleased to see Slade come out so quickly (I bought the first couple books direct from the publisher, Ellora's Cave). What I eventually found out was that Laurann Dohner had written the series years ago and was only just recently published so was able to get the original books released much more quickly than otherwise might have been possible).

Back to the book: I've read all of them to date and this one is still my favorite. There was just something so elemental in the dynamic between Slade and Trisha. He made her crazy and she made him smolder....and every time he called her "Sweet Thing" I melted. But I guess what made me love it so much was that he was just so willing to put himself out and let her know how he felt (with the one exception those of you who have read the book will understand). Anyone would love a guy who just really is willing to let you know just how into you he is (and when he's as gorgeous as Slade, all the better)!!!!

The book is well written, love the plot and the character development, and although the books are standalone, with each addition, there is that much more texture around the New Species series. I highly recommend this excellent example of erotically charged paranormal/sci-fi romantic fiction!

3.0 out of 5 stars Bad at first, then much better September 29, 2011

I almost stopped reading this book about a third of the way through. I hadn't read the first book in the series, Fury, because I didn't like the descriptions in the reviews. It's not enough for the reviewer to say they really liked the book, I want to know why so I can figure out if I have the same tastes. I thought I would take a chance on Slate, but the first third of the book has some really illogical plot developments.

Spoiler alert...

The initial sex between the Doc (female) and Slate was completely unbelievable. She's human, been in a horrible car crash, has heard the driver be killed by the bad guys, is running for her life from said bad guys, and hey, lets stop and have sex in the woods. What??? He's concerned that he has been hateful to her before he figured out she was his mate, and that the said bad guys are going to hurt her, and what does he do to reassure her? Come on lets have sex in the woods.

Then we go from that unbelievable situation to him promising her that he will always protect her no matter what to letting her life be in danger not one, not twice, but three times. And then he gives her up because if she is his mate, she'll always be in danger. So much for his promises.

I think the having sex on the run and giving her up was the author's way of moving the plot along, but she should have come up with better scenarios than what she did.

Fortunately, I kept reading the book and the second half of a book was much better. Thus the three-star rating. The second half had good character development between the New Species and the heroine and some amusing dialogue. I read another review that said these were reissued books. I wonder if she added the sex in the beginning to make it fit the current paranormal romance genre better.

This one left me cold. The subject was too analytical and seemed to spend most of his time cataloguing human faults.

More About the Author

NY Times and USA Today Bestselling Author

I'm a full time wife, mother, and author. I've been lucky enough to have spent over two decades with the love of my life and look forward to many, many more years with Mr. Laurann. I'm addicted to iced coffee, the occasional candy bar (or two), and trying to get at least five hours of sleep at night.

I love to write all kinds of stories. I think the best part about writing is the fact that real life is always uncertain, always tossing things at us that we have no control over, but when your write you can make sure there's always a happy ending. I love that about being an author. My favorite part is when I sit down at my computer desk, put on my headphones to listen to loud music to block out everything around me, so I can create worlds in front of me.
