Editorial Reviews

Gadfly Records is proud to announce the release of Slade Stomp, the new release from world-class flatpicking guitarist Beppe Gambetta. Slade Stomp includes original compositions and arrangements dedicated to the 'Masters' of flatpicking guitar that influenced Beppes music and career, both from America and Europe. 'Slade' was the mysterious nickname of Beppes friend and mentor Charles Sawtelle (from the Hot Rize band) who died in recent years.

Recorded completely by Beppe alone, the CD includes some solo live guitar tunes and some with overdubs (in one 'orchestra' tune Beppe played 110 tracks!). There are also two bonus live tracks featuring David Grisman and Gene Parsons.

Born in Genoa, Italy, Beppe began his musical training in a classical orchestra before drawing on traditional European and American guitar techniques to develop his own original style. In 1977, he formed the acclaimed Italian bluegrass band Red Wine. Later as a dynamic solo performer he toured Europe, America, Canada, and Australia while rediscovering, teaching and promoting flatpicking and other great, but less known, guitar forms. Beppe has collaborated with masters of the acoustic scene (Gene Parsons, Tony Trischka and many others) on ambitious projects such as reviving and contemporizing the energy of the 'brother' duets with guitar master Dan Crary.

When a musical genre is so closely connected with a specific demographic group, some closed-minded individuals get their hackles up when an outsider tries his hand at the genre. The word "authenticity" gets bandied about. Beppe Gambetta is an Italian. And he gets bluegrass. Sometimes it takes an outsider to bring a new perspective to the genre.

Bluegrass is a distinctively American genre, so closely connected to Appalachia that non-Americans, not to mention non-Southerners, are frequently given a hard time when they try it. Every once in a while, though, someone like Czech banjo player Lubos Malina comes along and does something innovative. In that tradition, Beppe Gambetta brings a distinctively European flavor to his flatpicking. Still skeptical? How about this-- he has recorded full albums with the likes of Dan Crary and Tony Trischka. And on his own, he is still a force to be reckoned with. What makes him more than a pretender, though, is that rather than try to hide his musical roots, he blends them seamlessly with his bluegrass flatpicking. There are hints of Italian folk and classical music scattered throughout his music, which ranges from achingly beautiful to rousing. He is a forceful picker who, like his hero Norman Blake (to whom a song is dedicated here), knows that the power is only magnified by contrasting it with the slower, more subtle moments. Gambetta likes his collaborations, and plenty of top-notch pickers are lined up for the opportunity to play with him. You can really see what he is made of on an album like this, though.

And as a bonus, none other than David "Dawg" Grisman himself makes a guest appearance on a track.

Gambetta is a virtuoso and this is a beautiful album. This CD offers a fine mix of bluegrass, original solo guitar compositions and even two Italian pieces. I have little doubt that fans of artists like Leo Kottke, Doyle Dykes, etc. will enjoy this CD immensely.
