Editorial Reviews

Comprised of all original songs, the tracks on "Slam The Door" have grown out of family life, joys, and failures. Yet even with all the realism, Nathan captures an authentic sense of hope for the future, as well as for the here and now. Musically speaking Slam the Door is driven by Nathan's solid command of the acoustic guitar. He is joined by fellow musicians on mandolin, fiddle, cello, electric and upright bass, electric guitar, drums and percussion. There's a lot here - and never a dull moment - but it easily holds together and still presents a musical range from subtle and sensitive to full and rockin’. Not only is this fun to hear, it is powerful in its content, taking the mundane to the meaningful.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album that speaks from the heart, February 18, 2005
This review is from: Slam The Door (Audio CD)
"Slam the door" is an album that speaks from a young father's and husband's heart. This acoustic album includes a variety of types of lyrics, from lamentations, prayers, and thanksgivings to plain old statments about life. The musicianship on the CD is suberb, including Nathan Clark George's acoustic and electric guitar to the supporting mandolin, fiddle, bass, drum, and other work.

Unlike the worship songs (psalms) on his 2002 "Songs for Everyday," the songs on this CD are more commentary on how Christians (particularly young married men with children) view the world and work out their faith in everyday life. But like the psalms on his earlier release, the variety of songs encompasses numerous human feelings and experiences. Put simply, the album is about human nature failings and God's grace. I have been blessed by Nathan Clark George's music, and this album especially speaks to me as father of young children.

Notable favorites (at least for me) are "slam the door", "why am I this way", "don't I know", and "little girl".

The title track is an upbeat prayer for what Nathan Clark George calls (in the CD jacket) "the consumation of world." In this song, he wonders why why world is still so broken and he dreams and prays of the joy to come. This upbeat acoustic/country track starts the album off great.

In "why am I this way," Nathan Clark George laments about failures as a father and husband. Any young father of young children can identify with this self critical song. The first time I heard this song, I got a tear in my eye because I think the message of the song rings true for most in this age and life group.

In a similar vein, "don't I know" is a statement about how parents are sometimes rough with their children when they think their children are misbehaving, only later to learn that their children really needed them. Most parents can remember a time when one of their children got out of bed in the middle of the night, when they disciplined the children for this "misbehavior", and then later learned that the child was really sick - and then felt really bad. The lessons we learn from these type of experiences, Nathan Clark George seems to tells us, should guide us, before it's too late.

Finally, "little girl" is a great sentimental song regarding a father's love for his little girl who's growing up to fast.

Although this review has been mainly about the lyrics and meaning behind several of the songs - don't let you be deceived. As I mentioned before, the musicianship on this album is suberb and warrants commendation.

In short, "Slam the Door" is an album from the heart, with songs written by someone with the knowledge and experience to write them, and musical skill to match the weight of the songs. For these reasons, I give the album five stars.
