Fungaroli supported herself as a secretary for 10 years before earning her doctorate in English literature. Working in a variety of organizations, she obviously did not always enjoy her job. Like Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, and Dolly Parton in Nine to Five, Fungaroli knows that those in charge don't always know best and that they can often be jerks. Her battlefield included offices at financial institutions and various levels of government, but lawyers are her favorite target. She honed her "slam and scream" tactic at law firms, where she learned to respond "in kind" to her bosses by slamming doors and screaming threats. Pragmatic but bitterly amusing, Fungaroli does offer usable suggestions for keeping one's head above water in the office pool, and her look at the secretary in popular culture provides an entertaining respite.
