Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Among Dickson's over 20 books, this is the fifth on aspects of American English. It is divided into 24 topical glossaries and covers terms currently in use. The arrangement by topic sets it apart from such slang sources as Robert L. Chapman's The New Dictionary of American Slang (Harper, 1986) and Esther and Albert Lewin's Thesaurus of Slang ( LJ 6/1/88). From the familiar to the odd, slang expressions regarding drugs, food and drink, medicine, sports, war, and other areas are represented by about 100 entries each. The definitions are generally simple and brief, with occasional chatty elaborations by Dickson. Pronunciation, syllabification, and etymology are almost never given. The final chapter consists of a short bibliographical essay. Dickson provides an address for the submission of terms for future editions. Though the book is well done generally, and Dickson sparkles once again, it seems better suited to personal than library purposes.
