3.0 out of 5 stars I'm A Bit Disappointed...But It's Still L7...., June 21, 2002
By Caitlin M. (Reisterstown, MD) - See all my reviews
Well this album definitly wasn't as wonderful and fabulous as i expected it to be, being a huge L7 fan...there are just a lot of blah moments on this CD you could say. But it is not totally hopeless- for instance, "Lackey" is a great song (who wouldn't want their own manservant?) and "Crackpot Baby" has a great driving riff...but there is just not enough traditional L7 attitude in here to make me listen to the CD without skipping any songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Check- Check- Check It Out, November 9, 2008
By Steven Swan (Illinois) - See all my reviews
Another one of my early purchases at amazon.com around '99 or '00 I believe.
L7 seem to be rocking at full tilt on this one, or so it would seem after the first two songs. I was pleasantly surprised with a more streamlined hard rock edge over the more grungy rock they were more known for. With "Crackpot Baby", and "Rockin' Machine" you get the feeling this might be a more aggressive L7 with nary a dirge in sight, but it does (thankfully) switch gears after those two rockers, and it's probably for the best for the CD to not get too stale, they do return to the grungy alt rock feel for a few songs, and there is quite a bit of experimentation on this one (although it helps rather than hurts it).

"Lackey" is a fun song....very bouncy that always makes me smile with that effect that rides throughout the song. "Freeway" is probably my fav here, it sounds strange....but it just fits after "Human" (which has the grunge crawl, and the alternative rock feel of "Livin' Large" which is a bit slower tempo song. Freeway is just such a fun song...once again in the alternative/hip-hop/rock thing, very retro sounding. Check-check-check it out! What is going on I have no idea in that song, but it sounds like fun. I love cranking this song.

The CD does have a great overall feel to it, not one dimensional at all, little bits of everything perhaps they have done over the years all blended very well in an overall happy tone. I do like the first part of the CD better than the last half. "Freezer Burn" and "Stick To The Plan" are probably my least fav tracks later in the CD, although the songs "Little One", and "Mantra Down" get it moving again. The second half just doesn't quite measure up to that first set of songs.

Still, it is a shame this CD never caught on, this is a very talented band that has influenced so many bands (both male and female), and has released such wonderful material, only to see much of it fall by the wayside perhaps. They did do alot more than just Bricks Are Heavy, and also check out "The Beauty Process" (and everything else for proof).
