Nelson recorded the absurdities and outrages of the nation's basketball courts and baseball fields in several highly successful anthologies of quotations, vignettes, and insults. Now he turns his ever vigilant eye and ear to the hockey arena, in a roundup of opinions as sharp as a skater's blades and as out of control as a runaway puck. 20 photos.
Kevin Nelson is the author of 18 books. His latest is Wheels of Change: From Zero to 600 MPH, The Amazing Story of California and the Automobile, published by Heyday Books and California Historical Society Press.
His previous book was Operation Bullpen: The Inside Story of the Biggest Forgery Scam in American History. A highly acclaimed work of investigative reporting, Operation Bullpen is now under development to be a movie. It has been featured on ESPN and Tru-TV, and is part of a planned 2010 exhibit at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown about forgery.
Another acclaimed book of Nelson's, The Golden Game: The Story of California Baseball, was named one of the top ten books of 2004 by the San Francisco Chronicle, National Public Radio, and many others. It was a finalist for the prestigious Seymour Prize, awarded annually to the best baseball book of the year.
In addition to his books, Nelson has written for Autograph Magazine, California History Quarterly, San Francisco Chronicle, West Magazine, DadMag.com, The Runner, and more.
The father of three, and a strong believer in the importance of fathers being actively involved in the lives of their children, Nelson is just finishing up changes for a second edition of The Everything Father-to-Be Book: A Survival Guide for Men, his popular handbook for new fathers and fathers-to-be. The new, revised edition of The Everything Father-to-Be Book will be published by Adams Media in spring 2010.
Furthermore, Nelson's The Runner's Book of Daily Inspiration is now in its ninth printing. It has been translated into Dutch and become a perennial bestseller for runners, inspiring them to achieve their goals in the sport.
Born in Arizona, Nelson has lived most of his life in California. He grew up in Hayward in the East Bay, studied English at the University of California at Los Angeles, and spent a good portion of his wayward youth trooping around Yosemite and the High Sierra.
