Slash, written by artist/author/activist Jeanette Armstrong, is a narrative journey through the main character's life. Slash is a younger man whom we follow through his trials and tribulations of struggling through 'modern' colonial life as he goes through the prison system, spiritual confirmation, and then becomes involved in political struggle. In the face of Genocide that is occurring against the Indigenous of Canada (and across the continent), this story exposes the physical and cultural manifestations of such colonial violence. The tale is also rich in oral tradition. A reccommended read for those who are aware of the political reality of Native People in Canada, and espescially for those who want to learn.

SLASH by Jeannette Armstrong is one of the most powerful books i've read about the experience of being Indian in North
America.
Told from the point of view of a young man- from his unhappy school days, through his chaotic adolescence, to his settled adulthood , it gives a compelling picture of the strengths and weaknesses of life for North American Indian people.

The book is unsparing in its condemnation of the effects of colonization on the First Nations, but it is equally blunt in forcing them to face their own responsibility in accepting this paternalistic control.

For the many First Nations young people wondering how to accept and treasure themselves and their culture, while fitting into the modern world, this book is an excellent guide. Many will identify with Slash who travelled the same
rocky road they are on - but who emerged from that swamp strong and proud, ready to pass on the strength of his culture
to his new born son, and to his community.
