History meets Sci-Fi,
By richard.harris@cableinet.co.uk (UK Central England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Slate Mountain (Paperback)
A worthy winner of the Katherine Fidler awards, this science fiction fantasy enthrals from the first page. The young girl, Ros, is our central character. New to the area, she experiences all the frustrations, rejections and bitterness that accompanies re-location. But she also experiences strange dreams that disturb her - she hates the night! The mystery unfolds at a good rate and keeps the reader guessing. When all is revealed the characters come together, some strong willed, some with insecurities but each one carefully developed and built upon during the course of the story. There are characters from Norse times, some from the future and even alien life forms all bought together by an unknown entity whose purpose is the destruction of Earth. A well crafted story, paced and carefully constructed to give a satisfactory read. The characters are rounded and believable and it was good to get to know each one during the story. The ending was a bit sudden but in all I enjoyed the adventure.
