5.0 out of 5 stars If you front on this album, you need JESUS!, September 2, 2001
This review is from: SlaughtaHouse (Audio CD)
Possibly the best album of the 90's. Definitely one of the best albums ever, hip-hop or otherwise. Masta Ase has always been one of the most respect cats in the game. This album is a shining example of why that is, there's no hype surrounding him. Ace is really that good, and he shows it on every track. One of the really crazy thing about his album is how he disses gangsta rap, mind you Slaughtahouse came out when Chronic was huge. And gangsta rap in general was really hot. He could have been another Snoop, and made an album that might have even gone platinum. He chose a different rout though, he wanted to stay true to himself. His apperication for the art form is evident here. You can feel the time and energy he spent on the lyrics, the beats are supherbly crafted. The album's concept is sort of an anti-gangsta thing. And as you listen you see how the album flows, almost as if it's telling a story. Ace has always been able to put words together in a way that makes you see the big picture. To portray a story on wax isn't an easy task. I can listen to this album from the first to the last second without a single skip. To this day Ace remains one of the best the hip-hop world has to offer, he deserves a lot more attention then he gets. But you can feel in his songs that he's satisifed enough just knowing he has fans who understand him.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album Is A True Hip Hop Classic., February 6, 2002
By moche (BROOKLYN, NEW YORK United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: SlaughtaHouse (Audio CD)
I have been listening to Hip Hop for some years now, but I have to admit that I discovered Masta Ace quite recently and this album was a true revelation to me. First of all the production is really good and solid. The beats get you to the belly, the horns are really funky and you can hardly help not bouncing your head. The production of the album is a treat and it is in my opinion close to the works of dj Premier or Pete Rock.
The second point that really caught me is that Ace's lyrics are on point and original. He manages to develop some conscious lyrics but he does it with humor and avoids being preachy. Ace criticizes the attitude of gangsta rap and it is really refreshing to hear an MC who takes time to think instead of just pretending to be hard.
Overall, Slaughtahouse is amazing. It sounds as fresh and tight now as it did in 1993. I consider this album to be Masta Ace's master piece and it definitely can compete in the best Hip Hop albums category.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ahead of its time, but past its prime!, February 7, 2002
I rocked this album on a regular, and thought it was banging. It just never seemed to get any play. Listen to the beats. Reminds me of the Wu-tang era. Raunchy drums, hypnotizing sounds, and raw lyrics. Now a days I don't even wanna hear anyone preaching about real hip-hop, because hip-hop is what it is: ever changing! Back then though it was a breath of fresh air. Especially with all the junk that was out at the time. I am a Master Ace fan from the "Keep your eyes on the prize" days, if you know what I mean. Slaughta House is a sleeper. Cop It! Don't sleep.
