Editorial Reviews

This feature-length special features stories about slave catchers and slave resistance, from the colonial era through the Civil War and its aftermath. Slavery was built on a brutal system of slave policing--enforced by armed community patrols, paid slave catchers, and federal law. And most of us think that slave catchers were always successful. But the bounty hunters' bloodhounds occasionally lost against the intelligence and courage of the enslaved. In the North, slave catchers were sometimes defeated by an organized--and armed--free black community. Using recreations, archival material, and scholar interviews, we hear stories of actual slave catchers and fleeing slaves that have never before been portrayed on film. Through the hunter/prey lens of time, these stories demonstrate that within the darkness, there was also light. For even when freedom seemed no more than an illusive dream, the enslaved and their supporters struggled for the day when America could be America...for all its people.

This documentary thoroughly examines the history of racial oppression from slavery through Reconstruction. It challenges stereotypes about slaves acceptance of system of slavery. The participating historians debunk the big myth that slaves were happy members of the planter's family who loved being enslaved. Ironically this myth is still believed and published in many revisionist history books about Southern history and the civil war.

This documentary features historians Sally Hadden, James Horton and Peter Wood. They reveal how slaves were willing to risk their lives and use violence to resist bondage and attain their freedom. They also draw the connection between slave resistance and the violent means owners used to control slaves.

Wood authored Black Majority and this explores the impact of resistance particularly the 1739 Stono Rebellion had on the development of Slave codes; this is what Wood explores in depth in Black Majority. The historians also explore how slave patrols were organized to mimic militias how these patrols evolve over time and how the state of South Carolina is divided into territories that are policed by patrolers. The methods used in South Carolina are copied by other states so the Stono Rebellion had a lasting impact on how owners devloped an organized system of violent control.

South Carolina population had a Black majority by 1721 and was a key location in terms of being the state where excessive violence and brutality was practiced as a way to control and terrorize the slave population.

This is a great video to learn and watch how African Americans have always resisted enslavement and fought hard against injustice. This is an excellent video to watch several times.
