3.0 out of 5 stars Not Her Best
I liked the other two books in the trilogy better. I found Robin's character bo-ring and was unable to get excited about any of her sex scenes. I felt she was a lackluster character. The Marketplace had much more interesting characters.

Once more, Laura Antoniou takes us into the world of the Marketplace where consensual slaves go through harsh training, then are sold for time limited terms to real owners. This time, she focuses on one slave-girl, Robin, and her journey through training under the hands of Chris Parker and then her life as the sole woman in her gay masters' household. In addition the novel itself, this Mystic Rose edition has a short story, "A Familiar Ring", which takes us futher along in Robin's service and gives us a glimpse back into the BDSM community as it exists today. If you liked the first book, you'll enjoy this one just as much.

5.0 out of 5 stars For all you subs out there ..., November 30, 2000
This review is from: The Slave (Paperback)
Chris Parker, the harshly self disciplined trainer, returns in the second book of the series to guide Robin, a woman whom rejoices in her need for servitude, into the mysterious underground world of Masters and slaves. Robin is trained and then ushered into a world where willing submissives are bought, sold and used at their owners discretion.

For those readers that fell in love with the BDSM classic, the Story of O, there has finally come a series that treats BDSM as more than just a cheap trick to sell poorly written porn. This book is well written, has identifiable characters and an interesting premise. Lara Antinou is a frequent guest at many BDSM conferences. I believe that her premise taps into the desire of many of BDSM scene (whether they go the events or just dream at home) that there is a group of people out there that take the leather scene a little more seriously than your average S&M aficionado. It is just a little exciting to think that if you can shine as a truly powerful Master or well behaved slave, that you may be allowed into a special clique of true devotees. In addition to her well conceived premise, the characters in the book are well developed and interesting to read about.

For those of you that enjoy BDSM but not bisexuality, this book has fewer homosexual encounters that the first book in the series. I think that you find it is a welcome break from aggressive, badly written fare that passes for BDSM novels.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite all-time fiction S&M book since Story of O, April 22, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Slave (Mass Market Paperback)
Ive read a LOT of S&M fiction and other erotic books,, and I have rarely found a book I treasure as much as this one. All 3 of the Marketplace books are fantastic,, but this one is the best, probably because it really explores the psychology of submission,, and the deep desires Robin has to submit to her trainer (Chris),, one so much in control (not out of control). What is also fantastic about these books is that the story spans across all 3, leaving you wondering about certain details about the characters lives, and pushing you to read the other 2 books to try to satiate your curiosity. I am really tired of reading collections of short stories,,, this quenched my thirst for an intelligent story with character development and a plot, and it lasted more than 15 minutes! Please continue the series Ms. Adamson???!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A better effort, June 12, 2003

Once again, Laura Antoniou takes us into the world of The Marketplace. This time, we follow Robin, a woman who gives up her familiar life in the hope that she can follow her dream of becoming an owned slave.

I found this book more readable than the first, probably because there's less of a focus on sex and more of a focus on the actual training of Robin in the ways of slavehood. We follow her struggles and her uncertainty and of course, we are teased again with the strange sexuality of Chris Parker.

I'd already been anaesthetised to Antoniou's typographical errors (what does she DO with these books? whip them up on a typewriter?), but they are still kind of annoying.

I feel somewhat ambivalent about The Slave--it's not the best book I've ever read, but it's not the worst either. I found that it held my attention for the duration and the temptation to read "just one more" chapter kept overwhelming me. Worth a read and probably a better introduction to the lifestyle than The Marketplace

5.0 out of 5 stars Hottest Book of the Series, February 12, 2001
Of all the books in the Marketplace series, this has always been my favorite. Not only is it filled with erotic imagery and some really hot sex scenes, it's a great look into the psyche of Robin, who is training to become a slave, and what kind of person would really want to do this. Antoniou really keeps the story tight, and keeps the erotic tension throughout the entire novel. I was thrilled to read the added short (well, not so short!) story that gives us even more about Robin and puts her into a great three-way with two really hot, fun, lesbians. The story is wonderful, and worth the price to pick up the new edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully arousing and informative, December 15, 2001

The Slave by Laura Antoniou is the second book in a series of erotic fiction books on BDSM. I started the series with the second book becuase the first one is back ordered and although I ordered it, I didn't to wait on it. Having finished The Slave, I'm glad I didn't wait.

This is one of the best books I've ever read, certainly the best book about BDSM I've read.

Robyn, a young girl confused about her sexuality, finds her passion is to live as a full time slave, completely dominated by a master, available to her master for anything demand, sexual or non sexual.

As well as providing graphic descriptons of sexual activities, the book also explores the lifestyle of a slave, and it's possible benefits and pitfalls.

I recommend you read this book, whether you are into BDSM or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Left me dying for more..., September 25, 2002
By
Having recently started wondering through the world of erotica, I started a search for a good book to introduce me to BDSM. Before reading, I niavely thought it was all about tying someone up and giving the pleasure through this. Now I see how wrong I was. Not only did it give me an honest glimpse into the real S&M, but the story line also caught my interest. I started with The Marketplace and after reading that, went out and bought the rest of the series, including hte Academy. I have lent the series out to family members, friends and even men along the way. I highly recomend this book and the others in The Series.

4.0 out of 5 stars A deliciously crafted book for all those who like realism, plot and sex with their D/S..., December 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Slave (Mass Market Paperback)
I must hand it to Laura for creating a truly entertaining story. I enjoyed the tale of one woman's quest to truly become a slave. I certainly appreciated the fact that there is no prince charming to take her to his harem, etc. type nonsense in this story. Once again Chris Parker is in top form as he personally takes the challenge to train her in 2 weeks and from then on as her sponsor/mentor. Not only is she trained she is bought in the marketplace by the most unlikely duo. But I don't want to give away too much but Laura manages to put humor, wickedness and sex together in a delightful manner. The surprise event towards the end of the story makes one think about what it must mean for some to say they are truly prepared to be owned. Enjoy this story of one woman's quest to fill her dream... you'll enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, September 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Slave (Mass Market Paperback)
As a submissive and active in my local scene - I found this book (as well as the other two) to be quite interesting. Both my Dominate and I read the books together - and both found shared and non-shared perspectives in relation to each of the stories. I found the books in the trilogy to be quite well written, and was quite pleased that each followed the story quite well. As a trained submissive - i can relate to Robin and what she felt and her struggle in her submission. I would suggest reading these to anyone who is interested in D/s - although, I personally don't believe they are indicative of the real life aspects of D/s - in that there is so much more than this little window into O/our life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly outstanding book in an excellent series, September 23, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
With The Slave Laura Antoniou establishes herself at the top of the erotic heap. This book is an excellent example of the MS genre of BDSM, Ds etc. Truly excellent and if you have been disappointed with books in this sub genre then this may change your mind. Robin has wanted to be a slave for years and had two semi successful SM relationships when Chris (from The Marketplace) agrees to train her for auction as a slave in two weeks. Chris and Robin are two of the main characters of the series which is notable for well drawn and compelling characters. The plot is good and there is notable humor as when Robin dates Greg in college and after all but writing "blindfold me tie up and be a pirate" he, being thick as a brick and about as sensitive, just brings condoms! The scene where Chris turns up to start her training is also good--he's wearing black jeans, engineering boots, motorcycle jacket with a dress shirt and tie--Robin thinks Ivy-league Angels their motto is, Think Yiddish, Dress British, and Ride American. There are a lot of humorous monuments as when Robin finds out who she is sold to. Lots of well written erotic scenes including same sex.

This is written nonlinearly and Laura Antoniou is very successful in pulling it off and making the stile aid telling the story instead of being a cutesy pooh gimmick.

Very well done and overall excellent, even if you have been turned off by some of the material this bock could change your mind.
