5.0 out of 5 stars Slaver's Challenge - A great read!, October 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Slaver's Challenge (Paperback)
Get this book! This one's a grabber. Sword play and battle scenes abound. There is not a chapter in here that fails to satisfy. The writing is clean and the book reads very easily and smoothly which might have to do with the bigger size of it that allows bigger type than most paperbacks. The characters were great. The good characters are not a bunch of goody-two shoes types but have enough flaws and quirks to make them believable and the bad guys are very, very bad. It looks like there might even be room for a sequel. Start a write in campaign now for this guy and don't miss this one. I liked it a lot!

5.0 out of 5 stars Slaver's Challenge, January 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Slaver's Challenge (Paperback)
This was my first science fiction adventure in many years and found the experience wonderful. The futuristic language and settings provided a challenge, but the author helped this with both a dictionary and glossary. Once I was used to the settings and story line, I became totally obsessed with finishing the book. The ending was unknown until the last moment. The author discribes the scenes so well that the reader feels part of the action. I am waiting for the return of the Slaver.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Adventure, September 18, 2001

I am not (or was not) particularly a science fiction fan, but this book was more of an adventure with some sci-fi setting. This book just got better as it went. The further I read, the more interesting the characters and the plot became. I particularly enjoyed the change from a futuristic world to a pre-industrial world, and back again. The battle and fighting scenes were particularly exciting and well done without being gratuitously graphic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slaver's Challenge, February 10, 2001

This review is from: Slaver's Challenge (Paperback)
For full disclosure I'll admit that I know the author and have traded sci-fi books with him in the past, but I was sincerely impressed with his first book. This was the first sci-fi book that I've enjoyed reading in quite some time, and once I started I couldn't put it down. I really could identify with the reluctant hero Jac as opposed to the all too perfect main characters that turn me off in most books. The battle parts are outstanding and very vivid. If you're into warfare strategy I think you would really enjoy Slaver's Challenge. The final battle really has some great twists that caught me completely off guard. In summary I thought it was an excellent read, and I am looking forward to Tim's next effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, January 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Slaver's Challenge (Paperback)
I had some free time over the holidays, and picked up "Slaver's Challenge" for two reasons: I like to relax with sci fi, and it was written by a local author (and therefore available in a local store). It was great entertainment. Intricate and engrossing story with well-drawn characters. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone who enjoys the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slaver's Challenge, October 22, 2000

This is an impressive debut from this author. The plotting is intricate and the writing syle engaged me from the very first page. I especially liked the battle scenes. The action is carefully laid out and written so well that I could smell the blood and the sweat. You get a feel for the hero from the very first and he is definitely not a cardboard cut out hero type but more jus a sort of average guy in a series of extaordinarily dangerous situations. There is something in this book for everyone who likes action-adventure type science fiction, even a romance element. The cyber-gaming part if pretty awesome too. A good find if you are looking for something from a yet to be discovered talent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slaver's Challenge, March 26, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Slaver's Challenge (Paperback)
Comfortable! No offense intended. This book was a great read.

The author has the ability to put the reader in the midst of the plot. I could almost see, hear , and smell what was going on. There were many twists and turns that kept me on my toes. The author even caught me leaning the wrong way a couple of times. There is a little bit of everything in this book. From spaceships and lasers to horses and swords, it's all here.

I like to read while travelling, and this book would be great for that! It will leave you longing for extended flights, but not delays (nothing can make you wish for that). The book felt like an old friend, comfortable. I'm ready for the sequel!

So why 4 stars and not 5? I guess that I turned into my old chemistry professor. Nobody gets a 100!

4.0 out of 5 stars Slaver's Challenging, December 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Slaver's Challenge (Paperback)
A very tightly written work with believable and engaging characters and enough action to satisfy any reader. This one will keep the blood pumping and the pages turning late into the night. The author very ably evokes a number of crisp images with his prose and they range from scenes of great beauty to situations of gut-wrenching horror. There are scenes in this book that will stay with me for some time and more than one phrase had the effect of literally sending a chill down my spine. I especially liked the use of the first person narrative here and found it very effective in the drawing of the hero as a sypathetic character to whom it is easy to relate. All in all, a very good read
