Book Description

July 2003

Meet Lars McDonald, oldest man in the solar system, survivor of the Venusian Civil War and the Mars Uprising. HeÂ’s been rejuvenated twice, made a prisoner of war, forced to work for two lifetimes as a slave in a concentration camp. Now heÂ’s escaped and slugging his way solo across Domtar Province, Venus, a leech infested, bacterial sump, twelve hundred kloms wide and his last remaining chance for survival. Join Lars, now, in his final trek, a bold, high-risk quest for freedom.

"Centuries from now, techniques have been developed to restore human bodies to youth and extend lifespans indefinitely. Unfortunately, the downside of that is that if you've been enslaved, you may have to work at hard labor for multiple lifetimes. The protagonist is one such person, who escapes his masters and treks across a primitive Venus of jungles and their associated dangers. This is an old fashioned other worlds adventure set on a Venus that obviously doesn't exist. The story is fun and enjoyable as long as you don't think too much about the setting and ignore the occasional lapses into commentary about the failings of human nature and the abandonment of a true work ethic."
—Don D'Amassa, Science Fiction Chronicle, November 2003

This review is from: The Slaves of Aphrodite (Hardcover)
Curious book. Ostensibly set in the 23rd - 25th centuries on Venus, Mars and Earth. In fact, large portions of it are retelling of historic events, and take place under the historic conditions. Thus the death of Albert Sidney Johnson at Shiloh is retold on Venus, but with cannonballs! Also retold is the story of the Alamo Scouts in WWII (New Guinea) and the experiences of William Chittenden as a Japanese POW. This last takes up 50 pages, substantial sections of which are lifted verbatim from Chittenden's "From China Marine to Jap POW."

The author has explained that this book was intended as a private excercise with friends and family. He was surprised and appalled that a few copies seem to have leaked into circulation.
