Cuba underwent tremendous change during the 19th century with the sugar boom and subsequent slave market, rebellion from Spanish rule, and the fastening of economic ties with the United States. Perez (history, Univ. of South Florida), author of The Cuban Revolutionary War, 1953-1958: A Bibliography ( LJ 11/1/76) and Historiography in the Revolution: A Bibliography of Cuban Scolarship, 1959-1979 ( LJ 11/15/82) presents a selection of travel accounts by various authors which chronicle that turbulent time. Contributors include Julia Ward Howe, Anthony Trollope, and Alexander von Humboldt. Perez groups the accounts as they relate to various aspects of Cuban life: the sugar plantation, slaves, crime, church, state, religion, health, education, and rural life. The writing is rich in literary style. Perez has created a vibrant chronicle of Cuba during an exciting era.
