Product Description

Stokes is pleased to announce the release of Sleek Nucleus. Eight effervescent songscapes that simply redefine electronic music. Each song is a crafted fusion of contemporary rhythm and melody sculpted from Stokes' hand-made electronic instruments. A lasting and unforgettable electronic album, Sleek Nucleus continues Stokes' 17 year history of merging sonic innovation with soulful song composition.

Saul Stokes makes Electronic Music that sounds like it is coming straight out of the wall outlet. Over the years he has become known for his concerts of sonic improvisation and albums of complex atmospheric energy. His work has always been, and continues to be, based on crafting original sonic elements and forms into beautiful realizations of texture and consonance. More recently Stokes has been embracing his internal contrasts. On Sleek Nucleus he produces music that registers in both the body and in the mind. Sleek Nucleus is front-loaded with catchy, engaging tracks - but although this CD's songs may be easier to grasp, this accessibility in no way represents a scaling back of ambition. While overlapping rhythms push Sleek Nucleus to the dance floor, for all its heat and beats the most interesting elements transpire quietly. His one-of-a-kind aural ideals bring a unique aesthetic to the field. This album is full of infectious rhythms, kinetic throbbing and subliminal pulse, but the thoughtful listener will also find grainy tones, chirping modulations and fascinating timbres amidst Stokes' melodic sound designs. Never succumbing to formula, Stokes uses ideas and imagination as maps. He is the musician who speaks most directly to our contemporary condition, but has always been too far out there and unclassifiable to gain the following he deserves. Not one of his works are less than perfect. --Chuck van Zyl/STAR'S END

...Resolutely electronic, Stokes uses none of the cliches to which we've become accustomed in electronica. --John Diliberto / Echoes Radio

...If you're a fan of electronic music, you either know of Saul Stokes, or you need to. Combining rhythms with lovely soundscaping, Saul creates lyrically beautiful music that sets a new standard.

As an ardent Saul Stokes fan I must say he bats it out the park again! This is a fantastic collection of electronic sound designs that will blow your mind. A continuation of the sound from his album "Villa Galaxia" there are some classic here that will stand the test of time. Every song is like a mini sonic adventure. No one working in the electronic genres is as good as this guy! Standouts are "A Two Sun Summer", "Colonies" and my favorite "We.Are.Signal". But if you are not familiar with his style of electronic music you should start with his masterpiece "Fields".......Spacecadet.tcb

Saul Stokes is a composer, performer and sound magician that uses hand-built synthesizers and modified electronics to create sounds that are vibrant and quirky, playful yet mature, and combines in a way that you are guaranteed not to ever have heard before. Imagine how an impressionistic painter would apply paint to a canvas, because Saul uses those same broad emotional strokes, yet when you look closely they all show full attention to the smallest detail, almost like every single straw in the thick brush has it's own voice that draws you in, but still somehow guides you to a place where you can just gaze over the big picture (very much like those fractal Mandelbrot patterns which you can just zoom in on endlessly...).

The structure may perhaps seem complex, as layer is piled upon layer of rhythms, harmonies and melodies, but there is always an underlying beautiful simplicity. Often a track begins with a quirky little rhythm, then a few drifting harmonies enter the scene, followed by additional blipping rhythms with tight snares, a simple bubbly melody evolves and all parts then work together to create this fascinating sound carpet that tickles your toes as you let your mind wander around in it and explore ever new angles. The different elements sometime slowly drift apart until just the basic rhythm remains, or there is just silence, before they begin to build up once again, and eventually fade into blissful oblivion.

Sleek Nucleus is Saul's eleventh solo album, counting Washed In Mercury (1997) as his first real release, and Saul here introduces us to a slightly different sound world, a bit more percussive than his recent four efforts (Fields (2003), Vast (2006), Villa Galaxia (2008) and Metacollage (2009)).

I've known Saul Stokes was a special kind of musician since discovering him through his 1990s Hypnos recordings "Washed in Mercury" and "Zo Pilots." The latter remains a memorably groundbreaking instrumental album for me. Its seven tracks traverse a wide range of pure sound, yet through his varied styles and methods, the whole remains a singular opus that still delights after numerous listenings. Stokes' latest work "Sleek Nucleus" maintains that high quality, offering synthesised sounds that range from soothing buzzed environments to fritched and insistent melodies. Not content with presenting a merely inventive sonic palette, his careful and sure-handed arrangements create masterful constructions that beguile, excite, and relax, as he wishes. Stokes is a master of sonic alchemy. Let me also join another reviewer in recommending the track "We.Are.Signals." as a starting point for sampling this album. Check out Stokes' own website for other fine releases that you might not find at the usual outlets.
