Reassured into sleep.,
By JOEY Greene (L.A., California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
As an attorney with lots of daytime stress in court or meeting clients or researching and writing briefs, I guess I am a "type A" high tension individual. My kind of daytime stress carries over into lots of sleepless or restless nights, filled with contiuing analysis and mental word processing. I do have lots of prescription and non prescription sleeping pills, but they leave me nervous or groggy in the morning when I need to shine for my clients. This book gave me some down to earth non medical hints on letting go of workday stress and allowing me to find some personal space at bedtime. I also found the alphabetical chapter arrangement with its short aptly titled subjects easy to negotiate whether I read through continuously or skipped from aptly titled topic to topic, without losing anything. Grant-Gray's light hearted approach made it easy reading and easy to internalize for future nervous nights.

An enjoyable read,
By George R. (Franklin, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
I heard the author on a morning drive-by show. At the time, I was on the way to work, and couldn't stop yawning. She provided helpful advice that made me think twice about my current sleep habits and lifestyle. I bought the book for my girlfriend also, and she bought one for her mother! The book is entertaining and useful, and an enjoyable read. Highly recommended.

Comforting and Helpful,
By Cindy Franck (Brookline, Massachusetts) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
I was referred to this book by the National Sleep Foundation. I was looking for down-to-earth, accessible information about sleep, and I think I've found it. The author gets right to the point: figure out the cause of your sleeplessness to find the cure. Then she provides helpful information and advice on how to find sleep no matter what your personal situation may be. Now I try to carry it with me at all times, and even saw a person reading it at the airport! "The Sleep Book, A Bedside Companion" is both helpful and comforting.

Saving money on pills.,
By Larry L. (Encino, California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
As a lifelong "problem sleeper" (Grant-Gray says not to use the words 'insomnia' or 'insomniac') I have prescription sleeping pills in my bathroom cabinet that cost me as much as $60. for 40 tablets or pills and numerous medications less than that, but not by much. Grant-Gray's book has helped me more for [less money] without morning tension or grogginess. Blelssings on Ms. Jody Grant-Gray for researching and finding common sense remedies like clearing the day's cares and worries and tomorrow's tasks from your mind before even climbing into bed. Easy to read and light hearted approaches to a really serious and pervasive problem. Can't wait for How To Sleep II. Larry L.

A comforting delight,
By linda (Brentwood, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
I came across this book in a bookstore right when I was complaining about my sleepless nights to my husband. The other books about sleep contained dated photos, charts and figures. We found "The Sleep Book" by Jody Grant-Gray, to be filled with entertaining information, and highly useful tips for sleep. The author seemed to understand why I wasn't sleeping! And then she told me how to get there. Useful, comforting, and entertaining. This book is a delight! My husband is happy I bought it, and that doesn't usually happen...

Jet Lag and the traveling lawyer.,
By Lee J, Attorney at Law in California (San Fernando Valley, California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
I'm a trial lawyer with all the stress that goes with that occupation. However, I have cases all over California, and have tried cases in many other states across the country. Presently I have been traveling to Arizona, Nevada, Florida and Massachusetts. Do I get Jet Lag? You bet -- (legal in Nevada where I have litigated in federal court.) Although even local trials created nervous anxiety, imagine flying all day and adjusting to a different tme zone and getting up three hours earlier in the east coast time zone. That always made me jittery about waking timely and being sharp enough to weather court battles. Lo and behold--The Sleep Book deals with all my sleep problems and devotes a special section to travelers' jet-lag. It worked for me, and the other topics cover most of my family's problems.

Realistic, smart and comforting,
By Aunt Laya Saul "Laya Saul, author of the best... (http://www.auntlaya.com) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
"The Sleep Book, a bedside companion" is aptly named. From the cover and inside design, to the gentle color choice of the first page, to the easy flow of topics, this book is a comfort to have next to my bedside. The author is honest, humorous and compassionate, and peppers her own writing with a spectrum of quotes from all kinds of sources. Arranged in alphabetical order by topic (...imagination, pain, passion, ritual, try, yawn, zzzzz...), I haven't read it straight through. I open it up to a page and start reading, one thing leads to another and I find myself more relaxed. This book is easier than a cup of chamomile tea. Treat yourself or someone you love.

Refreshing,
By John Rayser (Seattle, WA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sleep Book: A Bedside Companion (Paperback)
Unlike other 'self-help' or 'how to' books, THE SLEEP BOOK isn't preachy or patronizing. It just has practical information to teach me about, and help me to find, a good night's sleep. A refreshing take on an often frustrating task. I recommend it.

A friend gave me this book because I haven't been sleeping well lately. Since all that has happened in the world, it is so nice to find a book that can discuss tragedy and fear in such helpful and comforting manner. I highly recommend it.
