AN ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE RECORD,
By J. Cooper (Milwaukee, WI) - See all my reviews
This review is from: But Sleep Came Slowly (Audio CD)
Disclaimer: I have had this record for a long long time..I just have never gotten a chance to write a review for it until now.Red Stars Theory in my opinion is one of the most promising most amazing bands to come out of the indie scene in an extremely long time. It has been more than a pleasure to have this extremely talented band become a large part of my life. Everything about this record affects me a great deal on an emotional level. The extremely simplistic cover depicts a dark quiet solitary room along with a bed, a lamp and a window. I usually like to emulate the surroundings in my own room for those long nights when your mind wonders aimlessly. The music, what can I say about the music? Well..it's absolutely extraordinary, it combines the quietest, prettiest guitar parts, with a sort of light jazz drums, mixed with a beautiful violin. James Bertram's voice is extremely moving as well..his vocals get right to the point with simple words very meaningful words. The images that come to mind when I listen to these compositions are really the subtle things that happen in your life that affect you a great deal..especially when being sentimental. In the second track "I thought about you" James' quietly mutters "I thought about you again..today" a phrase I have found myself saying quite a bit lately. This record puts me in places I have been in my past and other places that I wish I could remain instead of returning to my normal life. Places that I somehow long for again in my life. Those days when things were simpler and you could just admire many of aesthetics and beauty of life without the everyday hassles. Do yourself a tremendous favor and pick up this masterpiece I'm quite confident you'll enjoy it. If you like this definitely think of picking up their second release "Life in a Bubble Can Be Beautiful" which adds new dimensions to their already amazing sound. One question...can I give "but sleep came slowly" 6 stars? Just a thought.

check the release date, these guys were pushing the envelope in 97.,

What's important to realize about this album is it's release date; 1997. By 97's standards it would be a relatively weak "indie" album (i don't think indie was too big back then, it was still on the tale-end (painfully of "Alternative" or "emo" or whatever we were thinking). But, though it wasn't groundbreaking, begins to push an envelope.
It's mainly slow-core... but if you listen closely you can hear the beginnings of wall-of guitars... and dare i say, the crescendos of Explosions in the Sky... listen closely, it's there.

slow, churning, rips you from yr complacency,

What a lovely band. Though the vocals may seem to leave some to be desired at some times, a few listens will fasten the vocal quality to the intricate, beautiful, and mathy-as-anything songs. The violin is a super added bonus, adding a wonderful depth to many of the songs.

Smart and stupid,

Another plodding, slightly saddened musical entry into the emotional-rock genre where scrappy instrumentation, powerless vocals, and generic soft/loud dynamics feel like prerequisites to join a club which this band attempts to compensate for. They partially succeed, especially in vocal-free extended passages which divert attention and shines a light underneath songwriting talents.

One of My Favorite CD'S,

This is a great album by some of the better musicians in the north west area. They really take songwriting to an amazing level, using mainly instrumentation instead of the very pop-driven structure we hear everywhere. The instruments and the vocals on RST are so well intertwined and work to make amazing pieces of beautiful, melodic pieces of great music. This album is one I will not let out of my collection ever.

long time coming,
By Charles S. Shannon (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews

It has been a long time since I last listened to but sleep came slowly (hence the title of this review). So long in fact that I was trying to order it over the internet, with which I am not very "savvy", and I asked my friend who was helping me to look under rust never sleeps, which may be the name of another band or another band's album I can't be sure. The point is that this album leaves such a lasting impression that even if you didn't know the name of it or the names of any of the songs or that it features members of modest mouse and 764-hero (which I didn't when I first heard it), the album itself would still be lodged in your memory as one of the best albums you'd ever heard. Certainly people jock life in a bubble and that new EP with the remixes or whatever but this is still the best album by far.

you cannot make trueslowcore if you lack emotion or passion.,
By "slowcore" (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews

what happens when you take a bunch of overconfident hipster indierockboys and have them try to cough up enough emotion to make a slowcore record in the vein of low, red house painters, idaho, etc? you get this sort of vague, emotionless, passionless drivel. it meanders along idly, not having much to say and not arousing much in its listeners. you get the idea that a bad mood for these boys involves a sunday morning hangover when someone smoked the last joint. the solution? to make a record like this, chronicling their "angst".if i were you i'd pass, no matter what bands these rock stars were in previously.

Greg seems to know his stuff... NOT!!! He really seems to have met the "I am over the age of 13." requirement for this site... NOT!!! He's obviously a bitter loser that doesnt know anything about music... RIGHT!!! I gave him one star so he feels good about himself and doesnt cry to mommy, but trust me, if there were negatives, he'd definitely get a good number.
