Book Description

September 2003
The brutal murder of Sarah Ford and the disappearance of her six-year-old daughter, Alice, shattered Julla Havilland's childhood. But these are not the only scars that have refused to heal. Shortly afterwards, Colonel Mitchell Havilland sacrificed himself on the Falklands hillside in an act of heroism. When Julia comes home from China fifteen years later, it is to a place of ghosts. But there have been other deaths, and the dead will not sleep...

Review

'Beneath the surface of this clever book we find a wise, richly layered and utterly convincing portrait' - Simon Winchester

From AudioFile

The strength of Steven Pacey's performance is its utter unobtrusiveness. Bradby's engaging novel revolves around two interrelated mysteries. Fifteen years earlier, when she was a child, Julia Havilland's friend and neighbor disappeared and the girl's mother was murdered. Not long after, Julia's father, an army officer, was killed during the Falklands War in circumstances that raised troubling questions. Now, new investigations into both events threaten Julia's impressions of her beloved father. Pacey allows Bradby's story to unfold without calling attention to his own technique. Even when employing accents, he reads with a naturalness that never diverts attention from the narrative. His accomplishment here is humility. This review is from: The Sleep of the Dead (Hardcover)
Tom Bradby is a writer. Not just mystery or thriller or crime fiction, but a writer. His thick, multilayered books are a pure joy for a lover of literature. His novels are stand alone, separate, well-thought stories that grapple with the deeper meaning of the exausting game called life. His "heroes", if you even want to call them like that, are brave and insecure, principled and coniving. In short they are real human beings, a mix of all the good and the bad they can possibly be." The Sleep of the Dead" is a lecture on trauma and pain. We can run, but we cant hide, especially from ourselves and our demons.
