Book Description

March 11, 2010
People today are sleep-deprived, and nowhere are the negative effects felt more acutely than in families. Most parents realize that their families aren’t getting enough sleep, though they likely don’t understand how serious the problem is and need help finding a solution. In this book, renowned psychologist and best-selling author Arch Hart explores why sleep is so important, what happens when family members are chronically sleep deprived, and how families can start developing healthy sleep habits.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Family That Sleeps Well, Lives Well! April 21, 2010
Format:Paperback
I have always believed that sleep deprivation plays a large role in kid's misbehavior, marital issues, depression and even my own "misbehavior"!!! This book Sleep It Does A Family Good addresses all those issues and more. Some of the issues were more technically dealt with than what interested me BUT there were so many truths through out the book that sunk in that I already see a difference in my own sleep habits!

Here's a few things I learned from the book:

1. No two families have the same sleep patterns, habits or problems. The issues my family may be dealing with such as night terrors, snoring or staying up too late on the computer may be completely different than yours such as a neighbors dog, room temperature, or a new born baby. There are a ton of different factors that affect our family's sleep habits including how our spouses were raised. So this is a more complex issue than it first appears on the surface.

2."God has designed sleep into us as a fundamental need, as fundamental as eating food and breathing air."

3. Lack of sleep produces more stress not less stress. For those of us who think that staying up late to get our work done is a way to relieve ourselves of stress - think again! The ability for us to think clearly, creatively and productively is reduced when we are sleep deprived.

4. Sleepy teens is an epidemic due to text messaging, twitter, video games and late night television. It's our job as parents to monitor our children and be sure they are getting the correct amount of sleep for their age. Animals sleep based on instinct - but children must be taught or they literally will not sleep!

5. There is a natural universal drive toward an early afternoon mini-sleep in all cultures.

6.

4.0 out of 5 stars The family that sleeps well, lives well! April 15, 2010
Format:Paperback
We live in a sleep-deprived world. There are many life-altering problems associated with sleep deprivation. In this book, families are challenged to look at their sleep habits and make positive changes.

My favorite quote from this book is "The family that sleeps well, lives well". Oh how true this statement is. My family has gone through various phases of sleeping patterns, from staying up way too late to crashing very early in the evening. After reading this book, I am definitely going to be more intentional about healthy sleep patterns for myself and my children.

In this book, I learned good sleep habits are taught from a very early age. Right now, my 3 sons have pretty regular sleep habits and I am very thankful for that. One concept new to me was the idea of a "Sleep Bank". Just like any bank, deposits and withdrawals are made. When you sleep, you are making a bank deposit, and when you are awake, you are making a withdrawal. The idea is to always have a positive balance in the bank.

One topic I also enjoyed were the categories of "Sleep Killers". These included: stress, anxiety/worry, caffeine, and depression. As a busy wife and mom I am prone to all of these at some point or another in my life. So now that I have ways to keep these in check, I will definitely put it into practice.

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful Information April 16, 2010
Format:Paperback
"Sleep: It Does a Family Good" by Dr. Archibald D. Hart

"Sleep: It Does a Family Good" by Dr. Archibald D. Hart is a well researched book. Dr. Hart produces detailed information and statistics on sleep and sleep disorders. The book starts off really well nevertheless, by mid way I felt weighed down by all the facts. In my opinion the author could have used less statistics and a few more allegories. However, "Sleep: It Does a Family Good" by Dr. Archibald D. Hart is beneficial and does point out very practical strategies for dealing with insomnia and other sleeping issues that arise in today's society . After reading this book, I have begun to apply what I have learned to my life and sleeping habits.

I feel that the book is written in a clear and applicable manner. I would recommend reading "Sleep: It Does a Family Good" if you are looking for information on sleep disorders or having trouble sleeping yourself.

A copy of this book was provided to me at no cost by Tyndale House. I was not required to provide a positive review, only an honest one. The viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nightmares and Monsters Under the Bed April 12, 2010
Format:Paperback
Dr. Hart goes into great detail regarding various sleep disorders that are common in today's families citing the patients he's seen over the years. I found the entire book a quick read and it helped me to understand the cycles of sleep more clearly and appreciate a good night's rest.

The portion of the book involving nightmares was fascinating. Here's a bit of what I learned:

Let's say you have a recurring nightmare that you're being chased by some big scary monster. You can't seem to get rid of this dream. You're now at the point where you actually dread going to sleep. What should you do?

Well, this book gives some good suggestions on how to bypass the nightmare. His methods seem to make sense -- although I haven't tried it as I don't have that particular problem. But that information alone was worth the reading time. There's a lot of information on sleeping disorders; sleep cycles; patterns; winding down, etc.

I think this book will give you ammunition -- in dealing with poor sleep patterns -- and keep you free from medication which is the worst monster of all.

(Thanks to Tyndale Publishers for my copy of this book.)
