Biography

While Run DMC and the Beastie Boys were rap groups who rocked, Rage Against The Machine were one of the earliest hard rock bands to rap. Tom Morello's distinctive guitar sound and vocalist Zack de la Rocha's messages of political and social consciousness came together to great effect, as RATM attained legendary status among 1990s alt-rock fans.

Rage Against The Machine were formed in 1991 by Tom… Read more in Amazon's Rage Against the Machine Store

Rage Against the Machine is all about singles, EP's, bootlegs and, really, a live band. Even though there studio releases are great, nothing beats a live Rage Against the Machine show. Well, since they have been disbanded for 6 years now, so the closest you can get now is Audioslave (no thanks). Anyway, whenever Rage Against the Machine releases a single, the import versions contain a bunch of live tracks, b-sides, live covers and even a music video here or there. These singles are available on Amazon, eBay, or maybe you can get lucky with a small, more underground record store. Never try chain stores, because the chance of them having an imported single from 7-15 years ago is slim to none. As for "Sleep Now In The Fire, Pt. 1", I have to say that these live songs and the original are, of course, great. But, that is a given when it comes to Rage Against the Machine.

The single, which is the second one off of their monster "The Battle Of Los Angeles", which was released in 1999 as Rage's third studio album. This is the infamous "Sleep Now In The Fire". The track starts off with the main riff, which is one of the coolest riffs Tom has ever made up. The thing about this song is it is so catchy from the start that you have to continue to listen to it. It's just that good. The verse is really Zack just doing a slow rap, or just talking, and the lyrics are very political, of course. The music in the verses is nothing special, but the chorus saves the whole song. This single was propelled to new heights on mainstream radio rock charts, and so was "The Battle Of Los Angeles". This song is a fan favorite, and just one of the many great songs released off of their last album with original songs. (Renegades was next, but it was a cover album). It is also one of my favorite Rage songs, and a live favorite as well.

Now for the extra's. Track 2 is "Guerrilla Radio", probably their biggest mainstream gem (and a great song) performed live. Of curse, the live performance is great as well. Guerrilla Radio owns live, and I am glad that they put it on here. Another live fan favorite, "Bulls On Parade" from their 1996 sophomore album "Evil Empire" is also one of my favorite songs. It sounds great live with that scratchy riff and Zack de la Rocha's sheer anger at the world. Another great song performed live. Of course, "Freedom" is live. Every Rage thing has a live performance of "Freedom", which is from their first album released in 1992. A personal favorite of mine because it brings back so many memories, and I can't help to love that sheer anger and aggression at the end (even though the vocals live are a little annoying). There is a live version of "Sleep Now In The Fire", stuck in there, and this is the best I have heard them perform on any live CD's or bootlegs. Another very good live track.

Yeah. So, even if you own the legendary "Battle Of Los Angeles", you have to pick up this single. This is essential if you are a Rage Against the Machine fan, and even if you are a fan of rap-metal, nu-metal or 90's alternative rock, this band and song are for you. Nothing beats a live Rage concert, but these live songs are above-average. Also, look for their bootlegs. This album should not cost you much used, and it is easier to come by. If you could find "Sleep Now In The Fire, Pt.2", then you get more live tracks and a music video. I am also going to clear up this issue with this single. There are many versions, but this is clearly the best one. The live songs sound great, it is easier to get and there is more of a track selection, even though these songs are on "The Battle Of Mexico City" DVD. These singles are out of print, so pick them up while you still have a chance, because it is worth it even for the higher prices that they charge for rare, discontinued singles, especially imports.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unreleased Live Material Worth Having, December 29, 2004
This review is from: Sleep Now in the Fire / Guerrilla Radio (Audio CD)
All four live tracks on this release are from the DVD "The Battle of Mexico City." They are previously unreleased on CD and not from "Live & Rare" or "Live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium." I give this a five star because it's worth collecting the unreleased live material.
