went from traditional spring bed to Sleep number
on May 21, 2012
My wife and I had an 8 year old traditional spring mattress which was in need of replacement. Unfortunately we just got back from visiting my parents who had a sleep number bed in their guest bedroom and both of us fell in love with that bed. I don't think either of us slept that well in a long time. When we got back in town we were back to our traditional, old bed and within a week made the decision to go check out the sleep number beds at the local store.
We tried the i8 model and it was good, but the wife wanted the M7 memory foam bed, frankly I couldn't tell much of a difference. I had concern the memory foam would be hot as I heard complaints of memory foam getting warm, and also had a memory foam pillow once and it was very hot to use. We learned that sleep number uses a special coating to "stay cool" and frankly, it works well as I don't get hot at all on this thing.
Now my wife and I like similar numbers, she's a 35 most nights and the first few nights I was a 25, nearly deflated but it was soft! Over the next 2 weeks I tried different settings and it turns out I like a 45.
The bed itself is built well. I didn't pay for them to come put it together as I figured I could do it. The bed arrived in 6 boxes (King size) and I had it put together in around 45 minutes. It was easy. In fact I had it on a new bedframe I bought which a few nights later bent (cheap frame) so I had to order a better frame, take the bed apart and reassemble it on the new frame, the second time it took about 30 minutes from start to finish to disassemble, move the old frame and install the new one and reassemble the bed. In other words, it's easy.
Now you may watch videos on you tube where people complain it's just an air mattress with foam. The concept behind sleep number IS an air mattress, the magic of the bed is how much foam and what type you get for the cost. If you get the cheapest bed it's like egg crate foam, nothing special. We got the middle of the line bed which has around 4 inches of foam. Go more expensive and get more foam.
The air pump is pretty quiet, both my wife and I can use it without disturbing the other one. I saw some videos where the pump was humming loud when in use. Not the case with us. You can when deflating hear the air escaping, not much they can do about that noise. But when inflating it's a very faint hum sound almost silent.
Would I recommend it? YES. The bed is a little more then a traditional bed, but considering you can change the bed at will is what makes it perfect. Need it harder? What about softer? Just push a button and find your setting. Try that with a traditional bed, you can't.
