Book Description

June 1, 2011
Many popular mattresses are a chemical nightmare, constructed of polyurethane foam, which is made from a petrochemical base combined with a chemical potpourri of stabilizers, catalysts, surfactants, fire retardants, antimicrobial additives and colorants. These chemicals are associated with environmental problems as well as human health hazards such as chronic bronchitits, impaired lung function, breathlessness, nausea, vomiting and allergic reactions. Some are potential carcinogens and reproductive toxins. Sleep Safe details how beds may be one of the single-most overlooked causes of people's health problems in the world today. Author Walt Bader shows the reader how to shop for a safe and healthy organic mattress, and provides tips for eliminating toxins in all parts of your bedroom--from the walls to the floors to the closets.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Rarely do we get the opportunity to make our lives far less toxic with so little effort. Please, make the non-toxic choice today, and like me, you will sleep safe and rest easy." -- Ed Begley, Jr., actor and environmental activist

"... reminds us of the health risks we face every day from environmental toxins and shocks us with their proximity. This book will open your eyes to better choices that will steer you towards a safer, healthier lifestyle." -- David Steinman, Diet for A Poisoned Planet

I am amazed that such a scientific, fact-filled book is also so easy to read! It's appalling how toxic mattresses can be and the seemingly endless "greenwashing" is no help. "Sleep Safe in a Toxic World" has not only boosted my knowledge but my confidence as well, I know now what questions to ask and which verifications are legitimate. This is my new favorite reference book in my effort to lead a less toxic life for my family and myself.

Recently a friend gave me the book, "Sleep Safe in a Toxic World" by Walter Bader. She knew I was looking for a mattress for my three-year-old son. I am so glad I read this book, as I had no idea about the health risks of mattresses made with synthetic, non organic materials. I also was disappointed to learn that the mattress I was originally considering purchasing contained flame-retardants with known carcinogens. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to educate themselves about the health risks of sleeping on a chemical mattress. It's an easy, worthwhile read, filled with really important information!
