I’ve done a lot of research on sleep for a book I recently wrote about how to improve your life in the 21st Century, especially about how to sleep more soundly and regularly. But I learned several new things by reading Dr. Robert S. Rosenberg’s new book Sleep Soundly Every Night, Feel Fantastic Every Day.

Dr. Rosenberg is the Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center in Prescott, Arizona and is board certified in sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine, and internal medicine. He writes a popular newspaper column about sleep disorders and has been an expert contributor to several magazines and TV shows. So, he has the creds.

The book is very well laid out and easy to read. Like most readers (I presume) I found myself skipping around and reading whatever interested me. In the end I read the entire book. Dr. Rosenberg has accomplished the delicate hat trick that few authors can accomplish…he has presented material that is often rather technical, but made it very easy to read for the lay person.
The book begins with a Sleep Disorder Checklist. The results of this brief test becomes your baseline for understanding and acting upon the information presented in the book.

Part One is, naturally, an introduction to sleep and its value. Dr. Rosenberg points out how the quality of sleep affects nearly every aspect of your life…from your ability to think to emotional balance to health. Yet 30% of Americans get less than six hours of sleep a night (seven to nine hours is recommended), according to the National Sleep Foundation.

Lack of sleep can have very serious consequences. You are 48% more likely to develop or die from heart disease, 15% more likely to develop or die from a stroke, and sleep deprivation can seriously compromise your immune system.

Firstly, this was an amazingly easy read. Most importantly, it gave me more insight as to why I was having problems getting a good nights rest. It really helped me analyze what the issue was in order for me to fix my sleeping habits. This book has honestly, helped me in ever aspect of my life. My days at work are better, and I am able to fall asleep quickly and with out any interruption. I think that this is a must read for anyone who finds themselves not getting the sleep they used too.

This is a great book with a lot of useful information. I found the questions at the start to be the most helpful. After answering them you was able to look and find which chapter to go to for help with your sleep issues. You didn't have to read the entire book to get help. (Though I did read all of the book myself.) As a sleep professional, I would recommend this book to anyone looking for answers about their sleep. It is a great place to start and will give you a good jumping off point for when you see a Board Certified Sleep Doctor to talk about your problems. If you have already been diagnosed, this will give you an easy to understand overview of your disorder.

This book answered all my questions and corrected my misconceptions about sleep. Surprisingly I found myself sleeping better after just reading the book, without resorting to any sleeping aids. I guess it put my mind at rest. I definitely recommend this book to anyone having trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. It will even give you a better understanding of any issues another family member may have when it comes to sleep. One important piece of advice Dr. Rosenberg gave, that will really stick with me, is to stay away from "blue light" emissions before going to bed, and also if you should happen to wake up in the middle of the night. I stay far away from my computer and phone if I wake up in the middle of the night and I'm finding it much easier to fall back asleep. Thank you Dr. Rosenberg. I'm definitely feeling more rested and have tons more energy.

I really enjoyed reading this book for two reasons:

1. It gave an informative, concise pow-wow on how to get quality sleep as well how to identify various sleep disorders.
2. It was clearly written by a professional.

Even if it's stuff you've heard before like "don't use electronics before bed, no stimulants in the bedroom, etc." It's still good to heard them as repetitive reinforcement is generally more helpful than hearing something once. I also trust books better when they're written by an expert in the field rather than a writer who has only spent time learning the material enough to write about it. That being said, the good Doc gets repetitive to a fault. There are FAQs at the end of each section and every answer is pretty much the standard, doctor answer. "I suggest you see a sleep therapist," or, "You need good sleep hygiene, I suggest trying A,B, and C" A,B, and C are the same for every problem and you could probably skip FAQ.

That being said, it earned a spot on my shelf. Definitely informative and interesting to all non-sleep specialists out there. If you want to learn how to get better sleep or whether you should see someone about your husband's snoring, I most definitely recommend this book!

If you are having sleep problems, you will find something new and helpful here.

I learned more about sleep than from this book than I've learned from two sleep studies and innumerable sleep related conversations with various doctors. Within a week I am sleeping better and am recommitted to using my CPAP.

With the exception of some rather simplistic examples of dialogue between doctor and patient, this book is well written and explains medical issues clearly. In addition to general information about the science of sleep, there were explanations for related phenomena such as frequent awakening to urinate, the impact of 'blue' light on the brain, and the damage done to the heart due to lack of sleep.
