A-ha co-founder Pal Waaktar once raised some bemused eyebrows when he claimed his band was more "rock and roll" than Def Leppard. Indeed, those only familiar with the Norway-rooted/London-based band's lightweight mid-'80s MTV synth-pop staples "Take On Me" and Bond film theme "The Living Daylights" might be surprised at the sometimes muscular, often guitar-driven band showcased in this double-disc live career retrospective. Recorded at dates for the band's 2002 European tour, it stands as a compelling reintroduction to a band that created some of its most interesting music long after its initial burst of MTV-fueled fame. Indeed, the mature dynamics and well-crafted drama of songs like "Crying in the Rain," "Stay on These Roads, " "Time and Again," and "Hunting High and Low" (the latter with an audience sing-along that emphasizes the band's continued Euro following) stand in sharp contrast to their unfortunate flyweight pop stereotype. --Jerry McCulley

Great album by a great band who recently made a comeback with two strong studio albums.

That is NOT the case here - this album is a great way to experience how these songs lend themselves well to studio as well as live performance.
Sean Welch
In lieu of this band ever doing a U.S tour, I'm extremely thankful for the opportunity to hear their live show!

Great album by a great band who recently made a comeback with two strong studio albums. This double live album provides a good overview of their career, featuring many of their hits, and well-recorded strong performances by the band.
Unfortunately, the music is presented in a 'copy-protected' format (not a 'redbook' standard CD), in which the audio signal is corrupted to discourage digital copying. This leads to a loss in sound quality when the errors are corrected on an ordinary CD player. Moreover, the first disc will not play at all on a computer - instead you must use the included proprietary software player to play 'compressed' versions of the tracks. Not only are these tracks badly edited, cutting off a second or two earlier than they should, but they are also VERY poor in sound quality, playing at only 22 kHz. We should not all be made to suffer because some people copy music.
In summary, great music, but a lousy format. Buyer BEWARE if you want to play this disc in your computer or high-end audio system.

Unfortunately for the usa ...and a-ha, this band will always be known for "take on me" here in the states. and that is very unfortunate, because their last two studio albums are masterpieces.absolute perfection.A-ha is a band that gets better with each album, never giving signs of weakness in their material.I'm not a big fan of live albums, but having seen last years live dvd of a-ha's homecoming concert,i was blown away.I knew i had to order this live cd, because living in America, the chances of seeing A-ha live are slim to none. The bottom line to this review is that A-ha is one of those bands that sound a hundred times better live. So much passion and emotion come through Morten Harket's vocals that to this day i still get goosebumps listening to "Hunting High and Low". wait till you hear the live version! even their 80's hits sound fresh live. nothing here sounds dated. theo only dissapointment for me is that "the blood that moves the body", which is one of my favorites is not included here. but thats ok, because "scoundrel days" and "manhattan skyline" are. Quick, get this limited edition double cd. it is worth the 30 bucks. and spread the word.

I am a huge fan of a-ha from way back... I have loved everything that they have ever produced and honestly, this is their best album to date! Not to say that it is their best work of all time... but as far as a complete album with every song being exceptional and as far as the flow from one song to the next goes, it is definitely the best album to date. A-ha's live sound is unbeatable! Morten's voice is so interesting to listen to and I love the emphasis on the guitar rather than the synthesizer. My only complaint about this album is that it does not include some of my very favorite a-ha songs "Dark is the Night", "Angel in the Snow", "Velvet", "Memorial Beach", and "Turn the Lights Down". On the bright side, it has a long list of excellent songs that you have to hear. I LOVE the live version of "Sycamore Leaves" performed by Pal and Magne's song "Dragonfly" is excellent as well (much better than the version on the lifelines album). "Time and Again" is breathtakingly beautiful and "Minor Earth Major Sky" really rocks. I can't even choose a favorite song from the list. I do have to admit that I am not a huge fan of the songs "Cry Wolf" or "Oranges on Appletrees", but even these songs don't sound bad on this album. The Live version of Oranges has a cool section in the middle of it that isn't on the Lifelines album and redeems the song. Also, the version of "Cry Wolf" is the first version I have ever listened to without cringing... The compilation maintains a high-paced energy which is a delight to listen too. With a-ha I am torn between my love for their stunning ballads and their heavier-guitar rock sound.Read more ›

Holland gave us GOLDEN EARRING, Germany gave us SCORPIONS, Iceland gave us the SUGARCUBES, and then, of course, BJORK, and Norway gave us this brilliant trio back in 1985 with a stunning debut CD, and two radio friendly gems for singles, and an outstanding video (remember Morten busting his way out of the cartoon to win the girl's heart?... magic!)... in fact I still recall seeing them perform TAKE ON ME on the Grammys the following year. Then what happened? My initial point: I'd love to see the world represented more by way of pop/rock... did the USA simply lose interest in Morten, Pal, and Magne? The truth: A-HA continue to release consistently creative, inspiring, and uplifting music from SCOUNDREL DAYS (the follow-up to HUNTING HIGH AND LOW) right up to the present release and this representative live offerring is no exception. Thankfully their catalogue is available on import and there isn't one I wouldn't suggest to a fan.

Now that I have my usual verbose proem out of the way, I'll tell you about HOW CAN I SLEEP WITH YOUR VOICE IN MY HEAD? This is a stellar live CD with only ONE disappointment: where's the title track from EAST OF THE SUN WEST OF THE MOON?????? It is a minor disappointment, and it shouldn't hinder your enjoyment, but that song is one of their shining, sonic gems. Further, be sure you pick up the double disc version so you can get the live version of DRAGONFLY. Other standouts included in this excellent performance are MINOR EARTH- MAJOR SKY, LIFELINES, STAY ON THESE ROADS, SUMMER MOVED ON (such a fabulous song), CRY WOLF (all the way back to SCOUNDREL DAYS!!!), TAKE ON ME, THE SUN ALWAYS SHINES ON TV, and their "Bond" tune LIVING DAYLIGHTS.
